Starmer calls for nationwide lockdown in next 24 hrs

We need a proper lockdown, like the first one we had in April, people have got so lax and their normal is to circumnavigate the rules.
What’s the actual difference between tier 4 now and April? Unless you are suggesting taking away support bubbles and closing schools? Because there isn’t any difference otherwise.

It doesn’t matter what restrictions you impose if people have had enough of following them or you can’t enforce them anyway. You even said people are circumnavigating the rules now so what difference would it make?

Close schools, no none essential travel, limited exercise time of 1 hour, working from home only.....

May as well just give up and carry on letting the idiots ruin things for everyone else then. 🙄

Can you build a runway in my garden then? I’m doing a lot of aircraft doing cargo flights atm bringing in PPE. How are you going to enforce 1 hour exercise? Is me seeing my child non essential travel? He lives an hour away. I know someone that took his own life during the last lockdown after getting made redundant. Cutting people off that live on their own from all contact is inhumane, not even the worst prisoners in the world get that treatment. All those clamouring for nationwide house arrest must have such the perfect life that it doesn’t affect them....Its not always so black and white for everyone and that will be evident when the suicide figures come out next year.

The NHS workers and Virologists are screaming that the virus is spirally out of control.
I understand those above who feel strongly that the cure is worse than the disease.
If only everybody would adhere to the recommended distancing, masks and hand washing then mayeb there would be no need for lockdown.

I dont see how the schools can be left open and I think it will be a huge mistake to let all primary schools open in the morning - its the worst breeding ground for any bug, as we all know.

The emphasis seems to be on primary schools- rightly so. But how dangerous are secondary schools. I am unsure whether to allow my two foster kids go to school tomorrow.

A proper lockdown like we had in March/April. My neighbours had people round every day, as did other people in the area. How can you lock down when you can't police it? And more people were compliant then, than this time round. People will always circumvent rules and we'll be locking down and opening up again till every single person gets the vaccine.

People are fatigued by it all and I understand that, I am sick of trying to stay as isolated as I can but that's the important thing to me - it keeps me my family and others safe if I can remain clear of the virus until vaccinated.

I know of two couples who have been to Whitby and Harrogate for teas etc - just as they often do - and thought no more about it than before this blight struck. I had a go at one of them when they told me, and they seemed astonished that I was angry (indeed it may have driven a bit of a wedge between us) and that for me it the nub of it all. They either don't care, don't think it's important, or it doesn't register with them at all.

How can you win when that is the case?

I know where you are coming from mate, it is so hard to keep fighting the good fight, lots of people have give up and reverted to normal living, and you start to feel like you are in the minority and out of kilter.
I sort of blame the government that they haven’t come down hard enough and been decisive enough, this has caused the apathy, I am sure of it.

Poor Boris... as General Failure once again he's going to be a week behind the man he calls Captain Hindsight.

Takeaways and coffee shops were closed and you were restricted to one shopping trip and one exercise per day.

It wasn’t illegal for them them to go to Whitby or Harrogate.

Some good points made.

Why this call for a national lockdown when there are areas that have suffered and have seen reduced numbers of infections ... and they are already in tier 3 and have been for quite some time. I'm fine economically but I know people who are losing their livelihoods and businesses that have taken years to build. As for schools ... it's already a total disaster for kids in exam years.

Please can you tell me where all these Tier 3 areas are that are reducing their Covid rates?

ALL the Tier 3 areas will be going into Tier 4 by the sounds of it - doesn't sound like the rates are dropping...

Children are resilient - this should only be for a couple of months and my the time they have finished school they will have caught up. Not so sure about the parents though! Seems that having the kids at home all the time is driving them mad 😄

I have a weekly virtual Saturday evening in the pub over zoom with some medic mates one of whom is involved in NHS planning and I can endorse this. Things are about to get very serious with serious consequences unless the R is brought down quickly and substantially. The opinion is that only the vaccine will now save the situation and it's a race to get enough people immunised. It's not getting better it's getting worse. For the first time they have me worried.

Yes, it's worrying me too this time around.

What gets me is I'm pretty sure we all expected a national lockdown in January so why doesn't Johnson just get it over and done with? The sooner we get in it the sooner we are out of it. All this dither and delay is farcical. It's like he's out of his depth and doesn't know what he's doing...

Some hospitals have temporarily ran out of oxygen.
