Sheff Utd Forum

Was the negativity [totally] unwarranted though? It did look like we'd blown it. (We still might have done, even if we win). We went from being in a strong position to getting 2 points in 5 games. (I admit I pretty much thought it was all over when we missed those sitters against Swansea).

We hadn't won three in a row since December/Jan... so I'd say the 'evidence' at that point probably was that we'd blown it!

If we pull off three wins and scrape in, it will be a (very pleasant and welcome) surprise!

"We’ve had our purple patch with Wilder and now It is hard to see where the next win will come from"

"We do not have the balls to win tomorrow."

"The fat lady has cleared her voice, it's over for another season."

"Clutching, clutching and even more clutching.... let it go. It's over"

"The clutching of straws is very apparent on this thread. Roll on next season, new season new hope"

Etc.
That's all I could be bothered finding.

As soon as we failed to beat Swansea, the play-offs were out of our hands and we needed help to have a chance, but there's a difference between thinking it'll be difficult and telling others it won't happen and they're clutching to even think it's possible.

The most likely outcome is still that we miss out on the play-offs, but there's nothing rose-tinted or straw clutching about thinking a possible 2 point gap could be overturned.

I hate that term rara. Coined by wizened old duffers like me unhappy that younger fans have a glass half full view on life? 😉
Nah not at all my thinking. Younger fans have a right to their hope and expectation it is part of their rightful passage. I was the same but slowly but surely with every passing season, you slowly morph into your dads way of thinking, reality hits home, you manage the highs and the lows, they cease to be as extreme on the Boro rollercoaster, you still feel them, but the ride is smoother but still thrilling.

You've completely changed your tune in the last 4 days, I don't understand it.

It's nothing to do with age, and it's getting quite condescending to keep saying it is.

On Wednesday, I was saying that if we didn't beat Cardiff, it was over, and you were telling me that we could lose to Cardiff and still have a good chance and reason to hope.

I don't understand how one result which actually favours us has completely changed your way of thinking, especially when we'd won the 2 matches before the said match.

I absolutely agree that is the most likely outcome and that it is not straw clutching or rose tinted to believe it possible, of course it is possible one or other might slip up, Boro teams in the past have done just that. It all boils down to whether Reading and Fulham will give of their best. We have to hope their personal pride means their desire to win remains or nerves get the better of Sheffield and/or Luton. An early Boro goal at Deepdale would help.

Exactly. No idea how age keeps coming up in the discussion. There will be plenty of older fans who think exactly the same as us.

Pointless all these what if Bournemouth win tonight comments.

What if Luton had won last night, but they lose on Saturday while Boro and Sheff Utd both win? Then we'd be saying drat, wish Fulham had beaten them. Who knows how it'll all shake out.

@Col how certain are you of a Boro win on Saturday then, given PNE have nothing to play for? 100%? I know I'm not, but then again that may be my wisdom and experience talking. ;)

Don't reckon our game will ever be 0-0. If nothing else Daniels should be up front if it gets to injury time, so Preston will score one on the break!!
Yeah but Daniels could go up front and one of our players could head the ball over the bar.

Unfortunately my gut feeling at the moment is that it will end up as an anti-climax but hoping to be proven wrong.

Come on Parmo lad, you were full of beans the other day! Letting the nerves get the better of you

I really do not think the need for sarcasm is warranted, I know your not 12

With age comes experience and learning, you will behave and react differently in life in 30 yrs time to how you do now, your judgement and decision making will be more nuanced on most things as a result of experiences I would expect.

I still wish Fulham needed a point for the Championship. Yes you say we can overhaul two teams, statistics mean nothing. Desire to win is a significant part of the outcome in a sporting contest. You can have all the ability, but if the desire level drops, so does performance and so does personal drive. In a team game everybody has to have that to succeed, if 2 or 3 of the teams players levels drop, so will the performance and the likelihood of success. I don’t doubt Fulham and Reading will approach their games in a professional manner, but I do question the players desire levels and feel that a bigger % will be there with Sheffield and Luton but less so in Fulham and Reading players with little in the game but their pride. I do know Ince will want his team to win, a lot will depend on the character of the players, I hope they prove me wrong and play with as much desire, whatever the outcome.

Like I say, nobody has a crystal ball, I hope you are right and I am wrong, we both call it as we see it. If we miss out, I certainly wont be saying I told you so, we will have missed out because of mistakes throughout the season on the pitch and ultimately finished where performances merit.
At his peak would usain bolt be able to beat a sixth place finisher if it wasn’t an Olympic final? Would he be more motivated to beat this sixth placed runner if the sixth place runner had beaten him in their last encounter..Perhaps earlier in his career?

Competition is Competition and Athletes are Athletes. Fulham have one eye on the prem, Sheffield players might have one eye on their way out of the door!

Think there is a chance we will do it.

Like yourself, I was one of the few saying we still had a decent chance after the Huddersfield game, when many others were saying it was over, and we were right.

Ultimately though, I have a feeling we may just miss out, but I'm still buzzing about the fact we were right and we've taken it to the final day.

Yeah I get that. All we could from the Cardiff game onwards was take it to final day and we have managed to do that. Now we just to win our game and get lucky. If we miss out then so be it but I really want to beat Preston

Just been reading that Sheffield forum.

They seem very confident of beating Fulham.

I don't blame them, they'll be rooting around for the positives as much as many of us are.
Last game of the season, big home crowd, needing a result, Fulham theoretically having little to play for.
I'm sure that's what many will be saying.

I don't think it will be as simple as that though.

But I have nothing against Sheffield United as a club, if we don't make it, I hope they or Huddersfield go up.

I would imagine that after Luton got thumped, bringing them into our equation for Saturday, the bookies odds on Boro making the play offs shortened.

That tells you if it was a good result for us or not. No debate.
