RIP Jack Charlton

Just read a tribute in the Guardian. One of the comments about the 74 era after we won promotion to the 1st Division says "On Boxing day, the next season, Boro were top of the first division. Typically, Match of the Day showed the league table from second on down (they really did). " Does anyone remember this? If so, it is frankly unbelievable, yet, this is Boro we're talking about...

Pretty much, I've never forgotten it. Boro top of the league and the BBC were known around Teesside for pretending they didn't exist. I made a point of watching Football Focus on the Saturday preview with Boro top of the league and thinking at least the b***ds can't ignore us today. How wrong could you be, They did in fact show the top of the league with Boro at the top, and the commentary started - "And after last week's results Liverpool drop to second place." Still couldn't believe it thinking that we must at least get a mention but it didn't happen. Never forgot that. I blame Jimmy Hill. The ****.

I always remember one year, may have been 77 or 78 when we were top after about ten games or something. The commentator was reading out the tables on football focus, mentioned that we were top, sniggered and said 'well, that won't last long'! As my dear old Dad used to say we were THE most disliked club out there.

In the late 90s I was invited to attend the official reopening of the newly restored riverside jetty at Amble, Northumberland, when Jack did the honours. He was presented with a beautifully turned fruit bowl made from timber from the original jetty, recovered when it was being rebuilt and he was so, so chuffed with it! Really made up. I worked at the time with Jack’s nephew John Smith, John told me later that Jack, with a wry smile, said to him, “I’m just grateful they didn’t welcome me with yet more Irish bloody dancers!”

A true Boro hero in every sense.
Followed his team all over the country, think I only missed 2 games home and away in 74/75 season.
Best Boro team ever in my opinion.
My school Southlands won the McQuade cup at Clairville Stadium (3rd year seniors) and at the presentation night as I was captain I had to go up on stage and be presented with the cup by the newly appointed Boro manager Mr Jack Charlton. What an honour as a kid to shake hands with a legend.
Was later big mates with his son John who played for same sunday team as me before he emigrated to Oz, an equally great lad.
RIP

I can't talk to much about the season we won the league, it was the best of my life as a Boro fan, followed closely by 74-75

My signed scrapbook from the awesome season with big Jack, my fav manager, big John, my fav player & Souness, IMHO, the best ever BORO player, I noticed Peter Brine sneaked in on the legends cover

My very good friend erimus11 text me with the sad news & posted, we went top of the league v Bristol City & stayed there, let's beat Bristol City today & go alongway to extending our stay in the championship (2nd division)

It was nice seeing him grinning and clapping at the final whistle of the promotion match in 2016, trademark flatcap on.

I mean the strip
Just a one off tribute to the great man.
True legend
If only for our final match v Sheff Weds we wear the 73-74 top & beat em 8-0

Brilliant man manager turned a decent side into genuine div 1 top 6 side in a season ish , found a style of play that was years ahead of its time using speed players running from deep like David Mills did, also signing Murdoch to nurture Souness was inspired

Top man

My earliest memory was when he was being interviewed for Match of the Day and a light bulb shattered close by him. He let out that's ********** it. Loved it so much as an impressionable youngster.
Love the 73-74 season team, moved away from the area soon after, but never lost my love of the Boro.

RIP Jack

Smog in Wilts: that was after we had won at Bristol City, 2-1 I think. As I remember it he was being interviewed by Motty in the dugout and the light stand was either knocked over or it fell; you saw the light falling left to right, heard a bang as it broke and the dugout went dark. After a few seconds you heard Jack say,

“Well that’s knackered it”
