Re Jones - be careful what you wish for

A comment from Michael Carrick at his media conference v Bristol City.
[Article summary]

" Carrick also said he wants to help younger, less experienced players [like Isaiah Jones] to develop and improve their game. He accepts players need the support of the coaches to get to the top of their game. Given that - he wont be calling out players and expects they will make mistakes. Its that approach which is already giving the team renewed confidence."

He definitely isn't "class", he has talent, but lacks good decision making and some technical aspects . He could go all the way or lower league. He's in the position Lewis Wing was 2 1/2 years ago. Personally, I think I'd cash in if there's a 8 figure offer on the table

You think he’s likely to attract an offer over £10m? That would suggest he’s pretty good!

No point in having coaches if they don’t improve players, particularly professional.

A post above about Isaiah lacking some technical aspects to his game.

So what?

Different era I know but Bernie Slaven couldn‘t head the ball or stay onside but became one of our most prolific strikers of all time.

Sometimes it is about effectiveness as much as the stats.

Hopefully the impatient idiots in the crowd get behind the team, Isaiah stays and Carrick gets to work on him.

Taken in context - he was asked about Isaiah Jones and commented that he is young and inexperienced - and how the coaches can help a player like Jones, develop his game and identify his strengths. If you want to understand the conversation, here is the media conference in full:

Yawn - the OP doesth protest a little too much me thinks. The boy is an amateur from an amateur league who will follow our last player of similar background Wing into non / lower league obscurity. The deluded can dream on 😂😂

The thing with Jones is that even on the weekend where he did not play particularly well he set up a number of chances.

He offers us something no one else does and has room to improve. The idea that he offers nothing is provably not true - However frustrating he was to watch Saturday (a day a lot of this season).

10m for a potential player from a prem side is peanuts. If you have 10 good games you can get that kind of offer. He does good things in fits and starts, but he makes a lot of errors also.

First thing he needs to do is stop going to ground when defending. Has done it many times this season
Second is watch his man not the ball, he should have been challenging their goalscorer on Saturday for some inexplicable reason he got sucked towards the ball and was 12 foot from the man he was supposed to be marking when he scored.
Third is stop trying to play the ball through the defenders when crossing, slow them down to a stand-still then push it to gain the space and cross it, you don't get bonus points for crossing through a defenders legs.

Some fair points but Lewis Wing? Really? LW never had a run of form anywhere near that of Jones last season nor did he ever look like he had the raw talent that Jones has demonstrated.

Also, we got 8 figures for Spence and Tav and look how that turned out… what makes you think it would be anything different if we sold Jones? We should be holding on to him and doing all we can to get him back in form and coaching him to be a better player.

Slaven wouldn't be a top two division striker in this day. He'd be a League One player that couldn't make the step up, and I say that as someone that watched nearly every home game he played.

It matters because the championship is a far more technical and tactical league than it used to be. It's now the 5th richest league in europe for income, and therefore player quality, it has many players of premier league experience/quality, many internationals. If you have technical weaknesses you will be targeted.

Jones has been culpable for quite a few goals conceded and yes he's created some, but he needs to cut down the defensive mistakes, and be more clinical with his crossing otherwise he's a weakness more often than a strength.
