Its that time again>>>>>>>
Tuesday night`s victory over Hull at their place was a milestone for Michael Carrick: for our new Head Coach it was his first win away, with the mouth-watering prospect of his home debut in front of a bumper crowd at The Riverside tomorrow [Saturday]. Hard to believe hes only been here 11 days! The whole atmosphere and approach to games appears to have been gifted a whole new feeling of hope and belief.
Although its very early days - Carrick`s calm, thoughtful and intelligent approach is definitely permeating our play - with a lot more yet to do. He is encouraging the players to push up the pitch and playing them to their strengths. Chuba has continued his rejuvination beyond all expectations. Carrick pointed out how his general play was as important at Hull as his goal-scoring. Like-wise Haydn Hackney showed his talents and been rewarded with a call up to the Scotland U21 team. Carrick also stressed that its not only the players who shine during the game, but those who work hard without being given as much credit - pointing particularly to Marcus Forss. Forss deserves his chance to prove himself and will hopefully get himself a run in the starting line-up more often.
All round, it was a good performance from the lads, with a smile as wide as the Humber Bridge on their faces at the end. It may only be one win, with lots of hard work to do, but you could see the confidence returning to the play - even if at time it wasnt pretty. A win is a win. The defence was looking more solid, particularly Lenihan, and Dale Fry appeared a lot more settled in his role.
Carrick has spoken about "stability" amongst the squad and taking out the over-emotional reactions from players, whether win, draw or lose. All his squad have begun with a "clean slate" - no matter who has played where, for how long and when. No player is guaranteed a starting place - but Carrick is quickly working out who can do the job he wants from them. We know, there are issues to be resolved in midfield and ensuring we stay solid at the back. Up front, Carrick says he has already had talks with Chuba about a contract extension - which is great for Chuba. Carrick also said he wants to help younger, less experienced players [like Isaiah Jones] to develop and improve their game. He accepts players need the support of the coaches to get to the top of their game. Given that - he wont be calling out players and expects they will make mistakes. Its that approach which is already giving the team renewed confidence.
Today is a really big day for us - the fans - to show our support for the lads and for Michael Carrick. It night be foolish to jump the gun, but Carrick has already said "this is not about me" - its about winning games and we all have to be onboard and pull together. This time, it could really happen.........
Come On Boro!
