Tuesday night`s victory over Hull at their place was a milestone for Michael Carrick: for our new Head Coach it was his first win away, with the mouth-watering prospect of his home debut in front of a bumper crowd at The Riverside tomorrow [Saturday]. Hard to believe hes only been here 11 days! The whole atmosphere and approach to games appears to have been gifted a whole new feeling of hope and belief.

Although its very early days - Carrick`s calm, thoughtful and intelligent approach is definitely permeating our play - with a lot more yet to do. He is encouraging the players to push up the pitch and playing them to their strengths. Chuba has continued his rejuvination beyond all expectations. Carrick pointed out how his general play was as important at Hull as his goal-scoring. Like-wise Haydn Hackney showed his talents and been rewarded with a call up to the Scotland U21 team. Carrick also stressed that its not only the players who shine during the game, but those who work hard without being given as much credit - pointing particularly to Marcus Forss. Forss deserves his chance to prove himself and will hopefully get himself a run in the starting line-up more often.

All round, it was a good performance from the lads, with a smile as wide as the Humber Bridge on their faces at the end. It may only be one win, with lots of hard work to do, but you could see the confidence returning to the play - even if at time it wasnt pretty. A win is a win. The defence was looking more solid, particularly Lenihan, and Dale Fry appeared a lot more settled in his role.

Carrick has spoken about "stability" amongst the squad and taking out the over-emotional reactions from players, whether win, draw or lose. All his squad have begun with a "clean slate" - no matter who has played where, for how long and when. No player is guaranteed a starting place - but Carrick is quickly working out who can do the job he wants from them. We know, there are issues to be resolved in midfield and ensuring we stay solid at the back. Up front, Carrick says he has already had talks with Chuba about a contract extension - which is great for Chuba. Carrick also said he wants to help younger, less experienced players [like Isaiah Jones] to develop and improve their game. He accepts players need the support of the coaches to get to the top of their game. Given that - he wont be calling out players and expects they will make mistakes. Its that approach which is already giving the team renewed confidence.

Today is a really big day for us - the fans - to show our support for the lads and for Michael Carrick. It night be foolish to jump the gun, but Carrick has already said "this is not about me" - its about winning games and we all have to be onboard and pull together. This time, it could really happen.........

Come On Boro!

Preview and Stats:

1667588281192.png1667588299067.png
Michael Carrick got off the mark as the Middlesbrough manager at the second time of asking thanks to a lovely Chuba Akpom header and a couple of own goals sealing a 3-1 victory at Hull. Keen to take the spotlight off himself, Carrick stated that he was “really proud of the lads, and pleased for them too” as his players have coped well with the recent tumultuous period at the club.

Next on Carrick’s agenda is improving Boro’s faltering home form which has seen them slip to a run of just five wins from 14 league games at the Riverside (D4, L5) following eight straight wins prior. Perhaps buoying Boro further is the fact that they ended a run of three straight home H2H defeats when Bristol City visited last season (W 2-1), yet they’ve not won back-to-back home league H2Hs since a run of four between 1979-1991.

Bristol boss Nigel Pearson was furious after a 1-0 defeat against Sheffield United in midweek consigned them to a third game without victory, commenting post match that “we're frustrated because we've been beaten and we've had some really good chances”. He now travels to Teesside to face the side he made 116 appearances for as a player, but that shouldn’t faze Pearson as he’s unbeaten in nine of his 11 H2Hs against Boro as a manager (W7, D2, L2).

With only one more league game to follow this before the World Cup break, the Robins would like to get some more points on the board to extend their slender three-point cushion above the drop zone. Doing that here won’t be easy though considering they have lost 13 away league games this calendar year (W5, D3, L13), the most they’ve lost on the road since 2016.

Players to watch: Akpom has been a bright spark in an otherwise abject Boro campaign so far, with his return of 0.76 goals per 90 minutes placing him second amongst all Championship players with 3+ appearances this term for goals per minute! Also posting a high average, Bristol top-scorer Nahki Wells (G7) has scored five times in his last seven meetings with Middlesbrough.

Hot stat: Bristol City have scored a league-high seven goals in the 15 minutes preceding half-time (31’-HT).

🗞 Match Preview: Middlesbrough (A)

Friday, November 4th 2022

Nigel Pearson’s side will be hoping to replicate their performance levels shown at the Hawthorns in their last away victory.
Riverside Stadium is the destination for the men in red as they prepare for their penultimate league fixture before the FIFA World Cup break.
The City Manager will be without George Tanner, who received a three-match ban for his late red card against Sheffield United.
City will be boosted by the return of Tomas Kalas and Rob Atkinson to training but Nigel Pearson confirmed it would be a late call on either centre-back being involved.
However, the midweek fixture did see Timm Klose return to the matchday squad following illness.

🆚 OUR OPPONENTS

Middlesbrough are a side who would have had high expectations for the 2022/23 season considering their 7thplaced finish last campaign.
A lacklustre start to the season saw Chris Wilder lose his job after 11 months on Teesside as his side picked up two wins from their first 11 games.
Five games after their decision, Boro had their new man in the form of former Manchester United and England midfielder, Michael Carrick.
Carrick and co tasted defeat in their first outing against Preston North End at the Riverside, before registering their first win three days later against Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
Chuba Akpom has taken his game to a new level throughout the opening three months of the season having found the back of the net of six occasion so far.

🔍 ONE TO WATCH: CHUBA AKPOM

screenshot-2022-11-03-at-172822.png

Chuba Akpom was born in Canning Town, East London, before joining Arsenal’s Academy at the age of six where he would sign his first professional deal at the age of 17.

The forward continued to impress with Arsenal’s youth sides, before the marksman made his competitive debit for Arsenal in a 3-1 Premier League win over Sunderland in September 2013.
Loan spells at Brentford, Coventry City and Nottingham Forest followed while he continued to represent Arsenal in the UEFA Youth League and the FA Youth Cup.

In August 2015, Chuba joined Hull City on loan and became an important part of the Tigers’ successful promotion campaign. The following season he also earned another Championship promotion after spending time on loan with second tier runners-up Brighton and Hove Albion.
His final loan stint from Arsenal saw Akpom travel to Belgian First Division side Sint-Truiden, netting six times in 16 games.

In August 2018, Akpom made a permanent move away from Arsenal, joining Greek Super League side PAOK in the country’s second city of Thessaloniki.
PAOK won the league title for the first time in 34 years in his first season with the club going the entire league season unbeaten, drawing just four times.
Akpom left PAOK to sign at the Riverside in 2020 before returning on loan for the 2021/22 season.
However, this season has seen Akpom take great strides having netted six goals to date.

***** Robins defence will be all over him from the get-go *****

MFC are delighted to welcome Chris Kamara to Saturday's game.

The former Boro midfielder will be introduced to the pitch at half-time of Saturday’s match against Bristol City, and wants to thank supporters for their “unbelievable” gesture against Rotherham United in September.

Battling apraxia of speech, Kammy revealed on the Diary of a CEO podcast that he feels “like a fraud” when broadcasting due to an under-active thyroid, which sometimes leaves him struggling to talk.

Boro fans responded to his heartbreaking revelation by proudly displaying a banner in the South Stand, which read “You’re not a fraud. You’re unbelievable Kammy.”

Posted across our social media channels, the ex-Soccer Saturday presenter thanked supporters on Twitter by replying, “Wow that is ‘Unbelievable Jeff’ Thank You”.
Kammy will be brought onto the field during the half-time interval to show his appreciation to the Boro faithful.

Act of Remembrance - At The Riverside:

MFC will observe a moment of silence to honour members of the armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice whilst in the line of duty.

Saturday's game against Bristol City is our last dedicated home fixture before Remembrance Sunday and a period of quiet reflection will take place prior to kick-off.

The silence will commence on the referee’s whistle before the bugler plays the Last Post.

Both team captains and the referee will carry wreaths onto the pitch and lay them down at the centre circle for the moment of silence.
The fourth official will then collect the wreaths, which will later be hung up on the Ayresome Park gates.

As special guests of MFC, Yorkshire Regiment, British Legion, Military Police, Parachute Regiment and 282 Squadron Coulby Newham have all been invited to the game.

Each regiment will bring their own wreath and regiment flag and will stand pitchside just before kick-off.
These wreaths will also be laid on the pitch as the period of reflection starts and picked up once the bulgar has finished sounding the Last Post.

Four Boro academy players will also be involved in the laying of the wreaths.

Carrick`s Call

Carrick 1st game.jpg
"Its not about me. Its about the players".

Listening to Michael Carrick is like attending a yoga class - turn up stressed and then leave feeling like everything is fine. The stress has gone and everything is under control.

Much of his Media Conference pre-Bristol was spent talking about setting the tone to ensure that players are ready to engage and ensuring they are performing individually and as a team. Asked if there was an extra "bounce about the place" following victory at Hull, Carrick replied "I`m not one for getting hugely up or hugely down". He stressed again that "stability" was the key and looking at the "bigger picture" when making decisions. Of course he was happy with the result. But, he stressed [the group] would look in training at what they didnt do well and at "what we could do better".

"Consistency" he replied to a question, "that`s the magic word". There is so much more to come from individuals as well as the team. Whom he picks for his team depends on the players in training, in attitude and performance: Its a "clean slate" where players have to work hard and prove to him they can do the job he wants them to do. He believes the team should play to their strengths. For him, it is the role of the coaching staff to enable players to develop their skills, to ensure the players were "looked after" and also to "push them". It appears there is little room for staff to not know what is expected of them and where they fit in to the overall scheme of things.

So. What of Haydn Hackney, Chuba, Ryan Giles, Massimo Luongo?

Haydn Hackney - "I loved seeing him play". "No fuss" - hes stepped in and played like he`s always played like that. For a young player with little experience "I`m delighted...really impressed". What a compliment from a man of Carricks stature and experience. Coincidentally, he was called up this week for the Scotland U21`s. What a season its turning out for young Haydn!

Chuba? "I`m pleased" for him. He works well off the ball for the team. And what of possible contract extension for Chuba? "We`ve talked already"! Thats comforting to know - clearly he sees a future for Chuba, but there is no confirmation yet.....

Massimo Luongo? "Hes training every day" - getting himself up to match fitness. Its clearly up to him to get himself in the frame if the opportunity arises.

Ryan Giles [on the Hull game]? He told him and the rest of the players "do what you`re good at and express yourselves".

Saturday - Riverside Atmosphere - Us Fans?

Carrick was unequivocal in the importance he placed on getting the atmosphere right:
"Im hugely looking forward and sampling the atmosphere. But, its not about me. Its about the players".
You`ve got to "use it" at home. He pointed to how the noise of the fans creates a "buzz" that gives the players "belief".
He also commented: from his experience of playing for Manchester United at The Riverside - it was always a tough place to come and he`d been on the end of a few defeats against the Boro! But, now the boot is on the other foot - he said "its not going to be nice" [for other teams to come here].
Its going to be a good atmosphere on Saturday. Michael Carrick must be the first Head Coach, where fans were practising a new song for him - even before he was officially appointed!

Lets get behind Carrick and the lads!

Up The Boro!

Promotion from EFL League one in 2014 / 15:
It was a night to remember in Yorkshire as the Robins turned on the style, scoring six past the promotion hopefuls. James Tavernier opened the scoring and later added another, whilst Joe Bryan, Luke Ayling, Aden Flint and top scorer Aaron Wilbraham were all on target.

index.jpg
James Tavernier played twelve games for Bristol City whilst on loan from Wigan Athletic. The next year he joined Rangers and the rest....as thay say...is history.
