Raheem Sterling

Was against him starting the first game in tournament due to Foden and Grealish quality but now Sterling is the first on the team sheet then Grealish. Sterling is outstanding for England and has been for a few years now. Let’s get behind the lads ffs.

What might have happened but didn't means absolutely nowt.
Your comment comes across as a bit churlish matey if I'm honest.
You can't say that, he dropped a massive bollok and we were lucky it's not the Muller of a few years back.

I questioned his selection back in May, he wasn't a starter for his club on quite a few occasions and stuttered when he came on.

He's certainly proved his selection was the right one, best player tonight.

Maybe It does - I still get very frustrated with him. And I’m not English. A goal and a great result for England shouldn’t mask criticism when it’s due but nows not the time in this period of euphoria.

Fair point.
I dont know about Muller getting older, I aged about 5 years when he went clean through!🤣

I'll hold my hands up. He's emphatically answered my pre-tournament concerns.

Quite easy to get all self righteous in hindsight though. Wasn't many quick to jump to his defense back when this thread was created. There was definitely a question to be asked regarding his club form.

He is quite rightly the first name on the sheet right now.

What I would also say, is that he not only has shown great form in this tournament, but great character. He will be aware of the criticism, and has been brave...showing for the ball and not hiding. Hugely impressive trait.

We will never know what might have happened if the team selections had been different. That is a fact.
What is clear is that we couldn't have conceded fewer goals and we couldn't have got further in the competition than we currently have.

Sterling has scored three crucial goals in a team that has struggled to create chances and take them.
He deserves the praise he is getting for doing that.

I wouldn't have chosen the teams Southgate has and wouldn't have played Sterling, but that doesn't matter a damn. I'm delighted England are through and hope that Southgate continues to steer England through. He will pick Sterling whatever I think, so I hope things continue to roll on.

Of course he should pick Sterling. Surely we would all pick him now. He is right to pick him, that is clear. I’m not a fan of this ‘ who knows what could of happened if we played the team I wanted talk’ well he never. He did it his own way and it worked. Southgate has been brilliant.

Sterling is the main man for England right now. If he was poor against Croatia, I think Southgate would have left him out for Sancho or Rashford. As it turned out, he was effective got the winner and has gone from strength to strength.

Backpedaling massively, you said he shouldn't even have been in the squad

I have this same discussion with friends time and again over Sterling, they think he is awful, lucky, I think he is excellent. He has pace and trickery that frightens players, yes sometimes he loses the ball and moves break down, yes he occasionally lets the opposition break in those circumstances as his teammates occasionally over commit, yes he misses chances, I remember a little fella in a red shirt doing the same a couple of decades back (i am not directly comparing the 2 players before anyone starts down that road)

Sterling gets accused of scoring tap ins as if its a bad thing. He gets in the right places to tap in, he creates chances takes 2 sometimes 3 players with him leaving space for others. His record alone warrants huge respect. He get fans off their seats. He is a player that people like Aguero, Kane thrive off. He can go inside or outside solo or playing in others, he is the best we have on our left to start. If he is having an off day, and he will, thankfully we have the bench we do. Just sit back and enjoy the ride and see where Sterling and his teammates can take us.

It's OK to be wrong and we ALL do it.
Having the grace to admit it shows a bit of class and character.
There's a few "I told you so" merchants here desperate to score points after last night. That's not classy and is a bit of shame really given the famous victory we just had.

I never liked him. Thought he was a luxury and gave away possession far too much.
Look at him now though. MoM for me and his workrate is phenominal and his play has a real honesty to it. Really pleased for him because he comes across as a decent human being and despite not being especially eloquent again shows his honesty by not being afraid to front the camera.

I think he'll just get better.
