Raheem Sterling

The optimist in me thought that he'd turn it on last night and clear a big mental hurdle prior to the England games, but it wasn't to be.

Mahrez was the riskier inclusion in my opinion. A player who would look immense at a team like Newcastle and definitely a great option for dominating the bottom 10 teams during a long gruelling season, but I can't recall seeing him drag a team into big games like Vardy and Kane could.

That said, even if Sterling, Mahrez and De Bruyne were in form last night, Chelsea's defence were incredibly good. Hugely improved from the weekly comedy errors before Tuchel's arrival.
Mahrez scored both goals in the Champions League semi final and one in the Quarter final. Are these not big games?

I only ever get to see the CL final as it's free, so like I said, as I recall: it's all PL coverage from what I've seen.

My opinion of Mahrez is probably biased after that awful game at the Riverside a few years ago. We were dreadful, there for an absolute thumping, yet it finished goalless.

Guardiola seems to think there is and he's better placed to judge that than you.
Neil Warnock is a better judge of football than me yet I’d argue all day long he was wrong to make Britt Captain and we all know how that worked out.

That's a fair comment regarding Assombalonga but can't be compared with Sterling.

Can’t agree with the point on Mahrez. He’s absolutely quality and has had a great season.

He's best, imho, when running at the box.. not a leader for me..
Rashford, Foden, Grealish would all start before him.. in my squad & team

It’s just my view I just don’t see Sterling as captain material. You obviously do.

I could be wrong he may be given the captaincy and really up his game and influence - you never know!

I don't think either way of him being a captain. What I was saying is he's a senior player and has leadership qualities. The fact that his was given the captaincy after De Bruyne was injured indicates that.

His inclusion raised a few eyebrows last night and it certainly didn't pay off.

Don't want to lay the boot in whilst he's down, but he's really low on form and really shouldn't be anywhere near the starting XI for the Euro's.

Can he regain his form and confidence in the friendlies? Should he be playing?
Yes I think he should be playing

Fine margins. Had Muller buried that chance following Sterling’s error then he would have gone from hero to zero. Fair play though. Enjoy your praise.

It's an odd one really, because he's consistently had his critics and yet he's consistently proved his worth.

I really hope this tournament will see the end of the criticism, once and for all, he's a top quality player and has easily been the best England player by some margin.
