Partygate

This is funny. The 1922 Committee will be busy. The rules are so opaque and vague they will be looking at the dates the letters went in and seeing if people really mean it :ROFLMAO:

When we do get electoral reform, I really hope this sort of thing is put right. That rules and funding is so opaque and weird for one of our two major parties needs addressing. When you think of all the fuss the Tories made about Labour and Union funding, which led to Miliband making some big changes, while they were funnelling Russian money like they did, it's just one more example of them laughing at us and insisting on different rules for others to follow.
I would encourage anyone who thinks this isn't a problem to look at the declared interests of Johnson in the Member's Register.

Thing is, this is just for the vote of no confidence. It's taking an awful long time to get the numbers and there's no guarantee it'll work.

Sad reflection of our politics isn't it? We are now relying on MPs to be careerist and save their own skin/seats instead of serving the public. Tragic

I'm sure Graham Brady is believed to be waiting until after recess to do whatever needs to be done. That extra time might mean the number of letters may well exceed 54.

A crucial part of the arithmetic is the Government payroll, junior ministers, private secs, and various bag carriers. There’s 174 of them. Their votes could make a difference.
(Edit) That would of course require resignations.

Feels to me like the government want a vote of no confidence before the privileges committee meet, then they’ll decide not to publish the finding of the committee

That could result in a constitutional crisis. If Johnson wins his vote of no confidence and is suspended by the privileges Committee we will have a pm who is unelected. The tories can't make Johnson leave for 12 months. A proper pickle.

Yes it would be a real fur cup.

Good explanation here by Phil Moorhouse of what could happen.

Doesn’t Johnson have the final say on any committee report? They make a recommendation but don’t actual have the power to suspend him?

I'm starting to feel Johnson would rather call a snap election and take the Tories down with him, than him marginally win a VONC and being a limp PM with a party full of "traitors".

On the poll of poll average yes, but not on the Savanta poll.

He hangs on by a very small 1.5% margin on the average. That is slim and could easily change with tactical voting, but it could also easily go the other way. We could be at a low point for the Tories, or there may be further to go based on the economy.
