Panthers Skater: Adam Johnson Vigil on Saturday 5.30pm at National Ice Centre

Only recently joined Panthers in the Summer.
The team formed a corden round him whilst paramedics worked fiercly to do their best to save him. It must have been horrendous for the team: prayers to each and everyone of them, and Adams friends and family.

I wonder if this will influence additional protective equipment similar to the flaps on the back of batman's helmets after the Phil Hughes incident. Or is this just a total freak accident.

They already have neck guards available and no itsnot an uncommon incident but thankfully most aren’t as severe.

Skate are sharp sadly it’s just a horrific accident.

It is, thankfully, an extremely rare freak accident.

Adam went up in the air and was caught by a Steelers skate. Its very rare, but its one of those risks unfortunately. There is a video online if you chose to find it, but its grim and dont think its appropriate on here.
Cant recall since I first watched Billingham Bombers over 40 years ago, to being a regular Panthers fan, seeing anything even closely like it..

The lads must be devastated.

Really, really sad.

The Elite Ice Hockey League have posted details of [NHS] counselling and support for fans and players, who witnessed the event.

EIHL Statement: Adam Johnson

Statement regarding Nottingham Panthers forward

The Elite Ice Hockey League is heartbroken to confirm that Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson sadly passed away following a freak accident in Saturday’s game between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers.

In light of this deeply upsetting news, the Elite League has postponed all games scheduled to take place on Sunday 29 October 2023.

The thoughts of everyone connected with the EIHL are with Adam's family, friends and team mates at this incredibly sad and difficult time. We would also ask everyone to respect the privacy of Adam’s family at this time.

Many of us will have found Saturday’s events very distressing. Please take care of yourselves, and each other. Further help and advice is available at NHS and NHS Inform. A useful resource for helping children is also available here.

Having seen the video before knowing about the incident, it almost looks as if the player throws a leg at him, its very grainy footage but both are stood up. I find it hard to comprehend how its happened, so sad!

Thanks.
I'll pass on the video.

Just watched it what a freak accident johnson is at a funny angle (almost ducking) then the other guy comes crashing over almost out of control raises his leg and we know what sadly comes next

My daughter is the Sport & Wellbeing Officer for Sheffield University this year (and a big ice hockey fan) and the university has strong connections with the Steelers. I've actually been in Sheffield to see her today and this has hit the hockey community there hard, so I can't imagine how it feels in Nottingham today. Such an awful, tragic and harrowing thing

Rest in peace Adam.

The more I think about this the more annoyed I am that a journey man sportsman lost his life while trying to make a career on the same night as someone made an absolute fortune embarrassing his sport while promoting a dodgy regime.

Always promoted as "The Worlds Fastest Game", things can happen in an instant.
You can never take your eyes off the puck.
The players are super-fit and need a lot of endurance and physical agility.
With all the protective body "armour" they move on and off the ice in 5`s - its relentless and a real test of their ability and skill.
I watched Adam playing last week for Panthers v Fife Flyers, where he set up two of our goals in the 4-2 victory.
Panthers sixth win on the trot.
It saw Panthers draw level with Steelers at the top of the Elite Ice Hockey League.
For anyone not familiar, Panthers and Steelers have the fiercest rivalry of any teams in the EIHL, which goes back a long way.
Every game home and away is always a sell out and the crowds are always up for it.
I know a lot of Steelers fans are feeling the pain as much as the Panthers and everyone in the Ice Hockey Family.
Panthers are due to play Cardiff Devils next Saturday.
The players will still feel the pain, but they`l draw strength from Adam and his contribution in getting Panthers back to the top.
RIP
