Panthers Skater: Adam Johnson Vigil on Saturday 5.30pm at National Ice Centre

RIP
Ice Hockey was obviously a massive part of Adam's life and he embraced it by giving his all to the sport.
The fact that he met such an untimely fate in such brutal and gruesome circumstances shows once again that all sport carries risk, but I think he would have inevitably wanted people to continue competing in ice hockey.

I remember seeing a video on you tube where a player had his throat cut. I think he was the goal tender in an NHL game, think it was in the 90’s. It was scary to think how easily it happened and how it was such an unexpected injury to suffer. It happened after a collision with two or three players and he’s left bleeding badly.

Somehow he survived.

It’s surprising that neck guards and face cages aren’t mandatory. It’s such a fast and physical game.

Such a sad incident and a shock for everyone there that night.

RIP

Clint Malarchuck in 1989. The guy was very lucky to survive.

The thought of that video being shared is nauseating. There's plenty else going on within this thread makes me feel sick as well.

RIP.

It's on youtube, the guy actually slows the clip down and gives his opinion on how it happened (yes a tad insensitive given the outcome)

Strange comment. How do you come to that from me saying it was reckless?
I'm not sure why it's remotely helpful to try and load some element of blame onto someone who must already be feeling about as low as it's possible to feel due to their part in what can't be viewed as anything other than a horrendous freak accident.

Apologies if that's not what you intended.

Only just read this now, didn't know anything about it. I'll stay clear of the video thanks, but I have to admit there is a part of me that wants to see it.

Sport if full of highs and lows, but when someone participating in a game loses their lives, it's nothing short of a tragedy. His family, team mates and fans who witnessed that must be suffering badly.

I’m afraid it’s only natural that some people are going to look at that footage and think it was more nasty than accidental.

Well, according to the BBC the police are now investigating.

I can't imagine that the player who did it will ever sleep again, but I think the question has to be asked about why his skate was so raised.
If this is the report you mean, then it's absolutely standard practice that the police would be involved. No suggestion of foul play at this stage. Honestly don't know why people are in such a rush for this sort of morbid speculation.

* People were still laying flowers and placing scarves and shirts as a mark of respect this morning.
There were lighted candles fans had placed in front of a picture of Adam in his Panthers kit. Very moving.

Adam Johnson's fiancée has given a moving tribute to the ice hockey star after he died in a tragic accident over the weekend. Ryan Wolfe said she would miss the 29-year-old 'forever' after he sustained a fatal slash to the neck caused by an ice hockey skate.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday night as Nottingham Panthers played against Sheffield Steelers in the Challenge Cup. Ryan reportedly rushed to be close to him and prayed he would be alright after the incident before her worst fears were realised.

Taking to Instagram on Monday morning, he said: "My sweet, sweet angel. I'll miss you forever and love you always."

The couple are understood to have become engaged over the summer and lived together in England, according to the Sun. A short statement was posted by Adam's aunty in the US following Saturday's tragedy, with Kari Johnson writing: "I lost half of my heart today. Love you always Munch."

Fans watching the game were asked to leave Sheffield Arena shortly before 9pm on Saturday following the incident, which was later called a "major medical emergency". The Challenge Cup tie with Sheffield Steelers was abandoned after the collision on the ice during the match at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield.

* Its been a sad season for Panthers so far:
Former Panthers Forward [last season] Mike Hammond, died in a car crash in Canada in July.
A book of Remembrance was opened in the Ice Arena which fans signed.

* The Panthers will undoubtedly do the same for Adam and probably retire his No. 47 shirt as a mark of respect. (y)

'Following Johnson's death, National Ice Hockey League team Oxford City Stars - which have former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech on their roster - announced their players must wear neck guards at all times on the ice.'
