New posters in Middlesbrough Town Centre

Should have had a few more like......

We are a late night punch up outside the pizza shop

We are scuttling in the alley behind the pub

We are pulling our knickers to one side and peeing in the gutter

We are doing a line in the pub toilet

We are wearing our tightest jeans and loafers

We are getting sleeve tattoos

;)

Whilst I am an advocate of public services, this is a prime example of how it sometimes just spends money because not doing so means losing its budget. Sometimes, it really should not spend the money.
Money can easily be transferred from one budget to another without losing it - I've been involved in doing it. Absolutely no need to waste money like this when there are better things to spend it on.

Are these to make the chavs, scruffs and illiterate feel welcome?

I've not seen anyone who thinks these are a good idea, everyone feels embarrassed by it.

This town needs to aim high, not celebrate the worst aspects which hold us back.

I've read the article and there are some much more positive slogans in the list.
I just don't know why they had to include the crass ones...

Imagine being round the table discussing the ones to be included or not.

"Ok, we have 'We are a Gary Special'?, or 'We are parmo and chips'"

Next up, 'Proper class', 'mint' or ' We are buzzing '.

They should have put it out to the public to either pick out selected ones or suggest some to be used. ironopolis and the infant Hercules spring to mind,

I think in the current climate it's probably best to keep things away from the public. We would end up with 'We are signs'

Would have been better with pictures of local historic people like Henry Bolckow etc or would they be called inappropriate in todays climate.

You can see one (silly) person coming up with this but how does this get to be designed, printed and erected in public without someone saying... erm that is shocking stop!

These ridiculous slogans just come across as insular. It's the idiots linked to Andy Preston who will be responsible for this. You get a lot of these repeated themes on Preston's social media output, day in and day out - 365 days a year.

Let’s Focus On What We DO Want

Council banners that have gone up around Middlesbrough are causing some consternation - and I understand exactly why.

The messages on most of the banners are great - but two or three of them are ill conceived and need taking down.

The banners weren’t brought to my attention until the last 24 hours - but I absolutely agree a small number aren’t appropriate and I’ve already asked for them to be removed as soon as possible.

But the council’s marketing team are talented local people who work their socks off and don’t deserve the public criticism they’re getting right now.

They do loads of good work and came up with a great concept for this - but made an error of judgement for some of the banners.

What I want now is for all those who are criticising, and understandably so, to stop - especially the local politicians who are trying to make political gain from this marketing error.

I’m calling on everyone who cares for or indeed loves Middlesbrough to instead tell us what messages they WOULD like to see on the banners. The best, most positive suggestions will go on display.
