Morgan Rogers worth 80 million.

I think most of the issue revolved around how quick it happened. We could all see he had talent. A few decent performances in the Cup games against L1 & L2 opposition and then finally getting in the starting 11 for league games .. and then, after 26 appearances in total - half as sub - poof! He's gone.

It was the surprise and the suddenness of it that caught people out, I think. Like I say - I don't think many doubted his talent .. but he'd barely had chance to show it before Villa came in and so it left most thinking "Huh?"

Those who wrote him off because he wasn’t performing at a time we were bottom of the Championship were as right at the time as those who said there was a player in there.

I think it’s a fine line whether or not these young players with promise kick on or not.

Rogere was lucky Carrick was brave enough to keep playing him.

£80m on the basis of a good game v Arsenal?

Shows how mad it is in the premier league.

He'd never have been worth £80m if he stayed.

You need to play in a top division for a team to pay that kind of money. You need to prove yourself.

Spot on. I never wrote him off but it was never guaranteed that he was going to “make it” at the top level. Obviously talented but that isn’t everything. Just ask Djed.

Like this one ?

To be fair at the time of that thread he was putting in some frustrating performances (along with everyone else). But it's the absolutism of some opinions that's quite amusing. Written off at the start of September is ridiculous for any young player.

By the time Villa were after him he'd started putting in consistently strong performances with moments of genuine top quality. Think most, but not all, could see his potential by then. Quite a few of us were a bit unhappy at the fee and wanted the club to reject the offer.

Although I'm not sure anyone predicted quite the impact he'd go on to have!

No they weren’t, they were clearly wrong and couldn’t look past the results and the fact he was being asked to play in a position he wasn’t comfortable with.

They could of said he doesn’t look ready yet or he needs to improve or let’s see him after a run of games in his preferred position, instead we got comments like he’s sh1te, he’s league 1 or 2 at best, he’s Sunday league level, he will never be good enough, not fit to lace McGrees boots etc

Hopefully he is worth that and Man United come calling in January after he has played a lot of games for Villa and is in the England team.

Football fans on message boards are not the most patient of people.

I personally thought we’d let him go a bit too early and a bit too cheaply. However if we play hardball too much it discourages the next few young talents to sign for us. Very important for a club like ours that this doesn’t happen and we aren’t seen as holding players back.

A tricky balancing act that I think we generally get right.

Yes but that’s football fans who are very disappointed with a shocking start to the season, we had been in the play offs just a few months previously.

Rogers was very raw when the Boro got him, I think Carrick and team performed a minor miracle to increase his effectiveness as a player August to January.

Am happy to say my enthusiasm for Rogers from an out of position debut through to his sale was consistent. He had obvious ability, talent and potential.
He had occasional poor matches and needed to be played at 10, but he was obviously so far and away the best signing of that window.

I was gutted he was sold, but wish him all the best.

No one was happy with the start to last season but the vitriol directed at Rodgers now looks embarrassing. The funniest thing is there are still those who value their own opinion so highly that they will never admit they were wrong. (This is not directed at you HC in particular, I have no idea whether you were one of these "experts")

Who are those experts you refer to who never admit they are wrong?
