Middlesbrough lodge £45m compensation claim

People said that when he went after Derby and look at that now. He employs people to run the football club for him. Why shouldn’t he go after cheats?
I've been critical of SG in the past and even said the same thing as the poster here about us focusing on our club but I have to say that I agree with him here. We've clearly lost out and its important to make that clear and to put the pressure where its deserved.

For me we should not be suing an already broken club.
Don't get me wrong. I am no fan of Derby county.
Its a poorly run outfit and has been for decades.
Brian Clough discovered that many years ago.
But all english football clubs are a special part of our heritage.
Built by our ancestors more than a hundred years ago.
They should be kept safe for our descendants a hundred years from now.
That club is on its knees and football could easily lose it forever.
Those of us over a certain age know how that feels.
All because Mel Morris gambled and lost.
He was gambling with something that didn't really belong to him.
Steve Gibson was right to doggedly latch onto this and refuse to let go.
But now Mel Morris has been driven out of the game. For now.
Let Derby drop into league 1 where I think they belong anyway.
It's time to let it go as far as Derby are concerned.
They can then sort themselves out and become a proper club for once.
We should focus on Mel Morris.
Claim back what we lost from him personally and get him banned from football.

Apart from the money (even £1m is no small amount to a club like us) assume this is Gibson underlining the point that all clubs should be sticking to FFP and punished properly if they dont.

Could this potentially put off any prospective new owners too?

I imagine it could be the equivalent of what Derby got for reaching the final? I know there’s a been an unwritten rule that the losers of the play off final often get the full gate receipts.
Nah that'd be less than 5mill

Interesting that they are so dismissive of Gibson, but it was Gibson who played a large part in bringing their clubs dirty deeds to task in the first place.
He might have just saved their club long term, if that clown Morris had stayed longer then the damage would have compounded year on year to the point the club was absolutely insolvent, he might have been 1-2 years from that

What if they have to fold. i wouldn't be happy for us to be associated with the permanent destruction of another league club
If we won 45mill and Wycombe another 15 mill then they might. But it'll never go to court and will be a tenth of that fee

The other reason he might be looking for £45m, is I’m sure we went after the same players as Derby.

Derby offered more wages/transfer fees than we could afford - I’m not 100% sure but some of them could have been sold on for a profit too.

They may also have pushed the price up of some of the players we bought, by bidding at the same time or even after the deal was agreed in principal.

I do feel for the Derby fans, imagine if that was our club? Some of us were about in 85/86, but the game is different these days and the sums of money involved infinitely bigger than those days.

Having said that I still support Gibson; Derby cheated the rules and for any punishment or recourse to have any teeth, then the wronged parties have to be part of that.

Gibson has fought long and hard to get to this point, don't forget MFC took legal action against the EFL in order to motivate them into taking action against Debry and his stance has been vindicated.

Taking the individuals clubs out of the equation you have to say that football generally is in a better place after this, because other clubs will be far less keen to follow Derby's lead.

We all want a level playing surface, so to speak, and its leveler now than it was before this case.

God knows where we belong if twice champions, once FA and charity shield winners "belong" in the 3rd tier.

- Sunderland are six time champions and two time FA Cup winners.
- Sheffield Wednesday are four time champions, three time FA Cup and one time League Cup winners.
- Portsmouth are two time champions and two time FA Cup winners.
- Ipswich are one time champions and one time FA Cup winners.

Derby will be in good company, they're going down because they cheated and they deserve it.

You've missed my point - why does the poster believe "that's where they belong"?

If it's because they cheated, then fair enough, but to suggest that's their rightful position is silly.
