McGoldrick

McGoldrick is ok in itself - as backup - but it would worry me immensely if Wilder ends up playing him as first choice.
I remain convinced that we will bring in two better strikers than Gayle, and that both Gayle and McGoldrick will be options from the bench.

If so then you would imagine Coburn will be loaned out. Signing 4 strikers in one window would be exciting.

Depends on their quality. The excitement on here in January when we brought in two Premier League strikers was through the roof. They turned out to be rubbish for us.

To be fair to deigo he tends to get over excited at pretty much any signing. Exuberance of youth I guess. I am more discerning or a misserable old ****** you can decide

Not the most exciting signing but no problem really with this if Wilder thinks it's what we need.

If we are going to make signings like this, I'm glad we're getting them in now. If we waited until after the Spence money came in these free transfers would probably end up being £500k here and £1m there.

I'm not even counting McG as a striker, more a 10 if he adapts system during a match. I also do believe that Richmond Josh will be out on loan this season
I get you CtC, but I really believe we will sign two good forwards on top of McGoldrick and Gayle. Two onion baggers who have more to them than "just" scoring too.
I believe one of them will be a Swedish international of Hungarian background and approximately 6 foot 2.

Gayle wouldnt be coming here without the guarantee of regular games, he will be expecting to start more often than hes not.

I fancy this will end up being a very good signing, not for his goals but for everything else he brings to the team and as mentioned earlier in the thread, he already knows what will be expected of him.

As poor as his record is he strangely loved scoring against the top sides in Sheff Utd's 2 seasons in the Prem, he got 3 against Chelsea, 2 against Arsenal, 2 against United and 1 against Spurs.

How old are you? Thought you must of been about 7 the way you go on, on here. It’s Diego by the way

Not true. Nobody at the club will be guaranteed games, despite some of the nonsense that certain fans spread.
I get that and if he doesn’t perform he can’t be expected to start, however he will be expecting to start the season as first choice and it will be up to him and his performances in Whether he keeps that place.

A one in five striker who is now 34. At last, we've replaced Alf Wood.
They say we can learn lessons from history

Lets go back to 1976 - Big John was sadly finished and we needed a big centre forward to replace him to partner David Mills

Alan Willey and Malcolm Smith were not good enough for the top division. Alan Foggon was not a target man and had been found out.

We nearly signed Ray Hankin from Burnley (£185K) and Willy Pettigrew available from Motherwell for the same. Instead Jack signed Alf Wood for £5k or so from Millwall, a 30 plus bog standard Div 2 (Champ) forward. £185k was like £30m now.

Willy won 2 League cups with Dundee United in 1979 and 1981 and 5 caps for Scotland in 1976/7. He commanded a £120k fee when going to Hearts in 1981. His goal scoring record was very good in Scotland but he never played for the Old Firm or out of Scotland. He probably peaked in 1977. Probably would have been a poor to very average signing, best avoided.

Ray Hankin went to Leeds from Burnley in 1976 and did quite well there but missed quite a few games through injury. Leeds did sell him in 1980 for £300k to Vancover Whitecaps, counting inflation they at least got their money back, He did bring a bit of trouble with him. Went down hill after leaving Leeds. Probably would have been a reasonable signing, but difficult for John Neal to manage.
