McGoldrick

Happy to sign McGoldrick if he's a back up striker.

Won't be impressed if he's signed to be a regular starter.

I reckon he’s a back up/rotation option rather than a regular starter. He also gives us the chance to play a different system at times as he’s more than comfortable as a 10. Wilder trusts him and got the best out of him so I can see why he has signed him on a free. Happy to get him in early so can get integrated in with the squad but yeah, we still need 2 first choicers.

Feels like a good signing.

watmore is far better in that role. McGoldrick and Gayle are yesterdays men with the best days behind them with little or no resale value, massively uninspiring signings.(n)(n)(n)
no resale but McGoldrick would be free and Gayle possibly a loan arrangement. I think they'd both do a job, with McGoldrick more of a back up option or no.10 if required.

Will they fit into our system under Wilder? Will they improve the team? Can they help us get promoted? If it's yes to those questions I don't care about resale value, I suspect they are going for as strong as team possible without the Spence money, if he gets sold then who is being mentioned will change as well, but at the moment our team is looking stronger than last season.

Middlesbrough set to sign striker David McGoldrick

.............MIDDLESBROUGH have held ‘productive’ discussions with David McGoldrick, and are close to making the striker their fourth signing of the summer. McGoldrick was at Boro’s Rockliffe Park training ground on Friday to discuss a potential deal with Chris Wilder and the rest of the Teessiders’ recruitment team..........

Tbf, Wilder's recent history on signing strikers can be seen as extremely poor.
It’s true but signing McGoldrick for Sheff U is up there with the best pieces of business Wilder has done in his career. Doubt it will be the same for us but could still be an astute signing and someone who will hopefully impact our season in a positive way.

He cant be blamed for two loanees who didnt live up to expectations.
Its always a risk.
What were his alternatives?
He arrived in November with the January window around the corner.
He had to work with what he`d got and what the club could afford.
"Politics" at Sheffield United - with the owner attempting to pick the team and decide on new signings - effected Wilders plans - which is ultimately one reason why he jacked it in.

If we start with Watmore, Coburn, McGoldrick and Gayle, that's very depressing
Where did we start last season and the season before that? If we have gradual improvement across the squad we are heading in the right direction.

No pressure to sell Spence and could end up with some money burning a hole in our pocket come the final bell..

McGoldrick and Gayle are solid and experienced.. plus no fees!
