Mason Mount

He's not bad, but he definitely needs to increase his output....although he is going in the right direction under Tuchel.

The likes of Foden/Grealish/Maddison/Barnes are all out scoring him and creating more chances - and yet of those, arguably there's only Foden who is playing with better players.

I think he's a definite in that England squad based on previous caps, but I'm not sure he's better than those names I've mentioned.

Granted they're all a bit different and offer something extra compared to each other, but personally I think Foden & Grealish deserve a spot ahead of Mount...and it's not even close neither.
To be fair to Mount he’s played a lot of his football further back in a deep lying playmaker type role.

Agree, and that's why I mentioned all those players are a bit different and offer something different.

Although Mount has been played deeper, I'd still expect more output and threat for him to be considered a place in the starting England 11.

Shame we don't have the same in defence. Give us the defence of 10/15 years ago (Cole, Rio, Terry, Neville etc) and I think we'd be massive favourites to win a competition.

Although I agree, our attacking talent looks as good as anyone's out there, I just don't have any faith in our defence. TAA can't defend, although he's fantastic going forward...therefore, maybe we're better off with Reece James who adds more balance with attacking/defending? Maguire isn't good enough but we all know he'll start most (if not all) games. Just hope that Stones is at the top of his game to help Maguire through games. LB isn't blessed with a lot of options. Trippier? Chilwell? Justin?, then the keeper situation isn't great when we're constantly playing Pickford (who, although has barely put a foot wrong for England) doesn't fill me with confidence whenever I watch him.
I don't disagree that we have a lot more in attacking areas than in defence, but I would argue that most top class defenders at 25-30 were not deemed potential superstars at 18-21. I might be wrong on that but I think CB in particular is a position that you can improve massively from 21-23 to 26-28. So hopefully someone like Ezri Konsa can continue to improve and develop into a good international CB over the next couple of years. I also think Joe Gomez could become top class, whilst the penny seems to have dropped with John Stones and if he maintains the form of the past 4-5 months, he could be a huge player over the next 3-4 tournaments for England. We definitely need someone to step up and replace Maguire as first choice in the next 18 months if we want to win in Qatar in December 2022.

TAA is a bit of a liability defensively, whilst Wan-Bissaka excels defensively but isn't as good going forward. Maybe Reece James will end up being the most complete player of those 3. Another left back option would be nice, as well as the afore-mentioned top class CB or two.

He's starting to add goals to his game which he needs to be doing on a much more regular basis than he has been.

Saying that....games against San Marino and Albania wouldn't even be a test for Lewis Wing, never mind Mason Mount!

Of course Marv the standard of opposition this week has been poor, but it's noticeable how quiet the haters have gone since TT has picked Mount regularly. I just thought it amusing that Southgate has called out those that decided after 1 game that TT agreed with them that Mount wasn't a good player.

"I suppose now [Chelsea manager] Thomas Tuchel picks him probably everybody will agree. When it was Frank [Lampard] it didn't count for some reason but he's an exceptional player.

"He finds space intelligently, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances, he can score goals.

"I thought his performance was excellent."

Ole ole ole Mason Mount Mount Mount 😍 what a player. Do not write him off at all. He proving you wrong all the time and I bloody love it. His parents are also lovely.

German manager Tuchel admitted Mount already numbers among Europe’s best, at just 22 years of age.

“He has the full package, mentally, in terms of talent and physically,” said Tuchel.

“And the most important part is his character, he has his feet on the ground and he’s a nice guy.

“He comes to Cobham every day to learn something new and have new experiences.

“He is the guy who can recover very fast, he’s a very physical player and is fully adapted to Premier League football.

“He has big self confidence in a very, very positive way.

“It’s a pleasure to have him, be at his side and guide him and support him.

“It’s impressive, he’s not affected by all the praise. This is maybe the most important part.

“He seems to be a guy who likes the sport, and feels an obligation to make the most out of it. And he wants it absolutely badly, so it’s a top mix.”

Some pretty shocking judgements on this thread! Just goes to show how wrong we can all be.

I have to admit I wasn't convinced to begin with. Perhaps because I always saw him as a Lampard favourite and I don't rate him at all. But since Tuchel has come in he's hit another level. And as an England fan, I'm very happy to be wrong!

Tbf he's done well. No doubt he's improved massively and is now a key player; I still stand by what I said previously that at the time he wasn't influencing games as much as Grealish or Maddison but he's now creating much more and looking good.

He is a different type of player to them 2 though. He’s got a bit of everything to his game. There is no weakness.
