Luton agree fee for Giles

I felt pretty certain he wouldn't be coming back to us after he made such a point of waving at the fans and kissing the badge after the final whistle vs Coventry. He probably knew then that if the opportunity came about for him to play in the Premier League then he was going to take it, either with Wolves or any other club.

I can't blame him for wanting to have a crack at the Premier League but I'd imagine Luton have more or less accepted they are likely to go down, and have signed Giles knowing that they have a player who has proven himself at this level and will potentially be a big player for them next season in the Championship.

Said numerous times last season. If he did not put a few super crosses in he did very little else. He got caught out numerous times out of position whilst defending. We need to thanks him for his year with us and move on. £5 million would be better spent one a couple of players.

It was certainly the right move for Bamford moving to the first premier league club that'd have him. Certainly didn't set him back or waste any years of his career 🙄

It's not always a "no brainer" from a footballing perspective.

Still, assuming it goes through, not our problem anymore. Plenty of other left backs out there.

The other thing to bear in mind is he will likely know Edwards from when Edwards was a coach at Wolves in 2018-19 and it is possible that has had some small bearing on his confidence in choosing Luton.

Whilst gutted, I wish him well, but not Luton. Middlesbrough is my focus and all i see is a nucleus of a team that lacks the quality we need. Lots of you seem to be full of expectation, optimism and potential, but that guarantees nowt in reality. With the squad as is (I know it will be improved) I don’t see a top 6 team this coming season as yet. Alex Bangura, at this stage offers me no additional faith coming from a team that has been relegated from an inferior league to the Championship.

In time, I can see me looking back on last season as a ’if only’ season.

You literally are being biased. To suggest otherwise is just silly mate.

I've not worked out the probability bit So people think we're a shoe-in for the Premier League? I would rather be in their position and worrying about coming down rather than ours and trying to go up. Does anybody disagree?
Yes I do. I'm sure if mid way through the season we were sitting bottom of the table with no points and no entertainment there would be a hell of a lot of people saying we went up too early, sack Carrick, Giles can't defend, etc etc.

Dont presume you know what other people get out of watching Middlesbrough, I would still have a season ticket in the conference because I'm a Middlesbrough fan, not a Premier league fan. I go to enjoy us watching competitive football which both Boro and Luton won't currently provide in the Premier league.

I would watch Boro in the Northern League.

He hasn’t chosen Luton over us. They’ve had a bid accepted we haven’t so it’s a one horse race. Currently.
Luton have chose ‘the buy it now’ option whilst we have been waiting for the auction to tick down and put our best bid in at the final second. Being outbid by Luton is something I never thought I would say (or write) but such is life in the premier league. I imagine we could match it but it would leave us short in other areas and we dont think he is worth it.

100% agree,we have a long way to go to get back to that strength, just now we look much weaker, certainly not a promotion team, far from it.

I find it hard to believe that we won’t match £4m for Giles. Something not right if we’re not prepared to pay that for a player who was so important to us last season.

I’m sure that we would pay but his agent has probably told us that if we agree a bid that matches Luton’s then Giles will still choose Luton so what’s the point of us bidding. i think we definitely tried to get him but we can only do what we can do.

Ok, time to start clutching at straws (yes I know its not the idioms thread)

Michael Carrick did not give a post match interview yesterday as far as I can tell. Maybe he did not want to get drawn into transfer speculation and the Giles situation in particular. He will have known of Luton’s offer and subsequent discussions and perhaps he didn’t want to be drawn into making a comment over a delicately balanced issue. Maybe just maybe the fat lady hasn’t started to warm up her voice down at The Brache just yet 🤔

I know, I know, desperate talk 😥

The Luton/Boro debate is fascinating.

They are in the Prem. A player like Giles getting half a season of game time in the Prem is a massive step forward in his career. He is making the right choice, if he has even got a choice.

Why do we think Victor Valdes and Negrado gave us an ounce of their time? Do we think they were impressed by our facilities?

If Luton are preparing for a sustained time in the Championship after next season then good on them. I wish we had that type of contingency after our year in there. Instead we got Monk. I also think we might need to check ourselves when we talk a club down about coming straight back down!

Luton are a great club with good fans. I have always enjoyed going there and having a drink with their fans. Good luck to them, they deserve it.

Why do a lot of posters keep saying he’ll struggle defensively in the premier league?

He won’t.

Because he won’t play ahead of Alfie Doughty.

Football doesn’t work like that, Luton had zero seasons in 15-20 in the top flight they still went up.
Think you are missing the point. The chance of us being promoted is relatively small. If he had joined us at any point in the last 15 years then there was 1 successful promotion campaign. Chances are we won't be permitted this season because most seasons we aren't.

If he joins Luton he isn't gambling on getting promoted, they already have been.

I completely disagree about it ruining reputations. A good player in a poor squad will still have their reputation enhanced. If he does poorly he's still guaranteed a career at championship level because he's already proven.

Surely it's not hard to comprehend that the chances of him having a good season in the PL and enhancing a reputation is made of 2 things. Chance of playing in the PL x chance of having a good season. Even if that's a 10% chance with Luton that's better (100% X 10% = 10%) than the odds of Boro being promoted and then having a good PL season (20% X 20% = 4%).

and by that rationale 1 defensive mistake in the prem is 10 times worse than in the championship.
Not even slightly. A mistake for a £80m player playing for City/Utd is damaging maybe but everyone is expecting teams like Luton to concede goals so losing in a poor team isn't reputation damaging.

I don't think there was bias in the Boro over Luton opinion..

Yes, they are in the PL & full credit to them for getting out of this tough league & there, excellent job done.. however..

Their infrastructure & facilities are 2nd Division standard at best, their squad is functional & very much built on, commendable, team spirit..

I'd have liked Giles to be signing for us - though £5m for a Championship club is huge & better spent on attacking players..

I anticipate a really tough season ahead for Giles, I don't think Luton are a good fit for him - they are very direct & very little passing & creative football..

I predict they will be low double points at best, possibly lowest ever points total, & have leagues lowest possession stats & so be defending for majority of the time - all of which are counter to Giles strengths & indeed will highlight areas of his game that are, currently, weakest..

So, with thought & reason, I to would have chosen a lower league & a promotion campaign at a better structured club: Boro.. over Luton..
