Luton agree fee for Giles

What we do know so far:

Ryan Giles

A £5m fee was reported agreed between Wolves and Luton (in fairly reputable media) on Saturday lunchtime.

Giles is 23.5 (not a youngster) and has played 119 championship games in the last 3 years, with well above average number of assists. Although is not seen as anything special as a defender at Championship level.

He has played for England at under 20 level.

A week ago he was training with the Wolves Premier League first team suggesting he would be at least cover at left back/left wing back for 2023/4. He appeared to be fully fit.

He is a UK citizen so no special employment paperwork required.

Luton Town - July 2023

They have signed several mid and lower table Championship and Division 1 players, plus a lower level Dutch player and taken a Manchester City young player on loan who did play for Marseille last season. Not out of character with previous seasons i.e very careful purchases. One player (Chong) did cost a believed to be £4m which is a record for Luton.

Four? players from last season have been given improved contracts.

They were known for paying below average Championship wages last season (so their promotion was particularly remarkable)

I will let others make conclusions and deductions.

All he has posted is stuff off OneBoro (none of which is substantiated)...
Something is amiss with the Luton deal. Only tweets on Saturday saying they were confident. Then nothing.
Wouldn't be surprised if we have upped our terms (more upfront etc)
Giles / Wolves holding it up.
Until announced at Luton end I think we are still negotiating..
Time will tell

Would’ve personally abandoned the Giles deal at this point, given we’re seeing good left backs like Buchanan and Manning go for a lot less money to rivals and there’s still a massive chance we miss out. If he was to come back, it’d be a massive plus regardless though, but I wouldn’t ever blame the lad for feeling he deserves a crack at the big time after multiple good Championship seasons.

For me, when they start playing hardball you walk away. You need people committed to the project, with the mindset that this project is going to make them better players, that they're going to enjoy being here and learning and improving and get a big financial pay back in the long run. If they're not committed to that, then see ya

Manning went to his old manager.
Buchanan was a good prospect at Derby.

We might still get Giles.. £5.5m + add ons sounds a bit rich

If not we’ll bring someone else who is good.. in a different way.

Love us to get Lewis Hall on loan, Chelsea have a few left backs, and he won't get a look in

A loan move for Ian Maatsen might be a good shout from Chelsea.... Played for Burnley last season, 6 assists and 4 goals.

Dylan Williams looks like a good LB from Chelsea U21s too... He was breaking into the Derby first team when he was 17 before Chelsea got their youth stealing mitts on him.

Why stop there?

Should go try and get Reece James on loan too. Maybe even putting in a cheeky offer for Nkunku.

I don’t think Lewis Hall is unrealistic but Maatsen will either get a prem move or be a part of Poch’s plans.

Is Ian Maatsen somehow of comparable ability to Reece James or Nkunku these days
Not in ability.

But very much comparable in the chances of getting them on loan.

Burnley are struggling to get Maatsen back on loan ...yet somehow it would be a good shout for us to try get him...
