Luton agree fee for Giles

You literally are being biased. To suggest otherwise is just silly mate.

I've not worked out the probability bit So people think we're a shoe-in for the Premier League? I would rather be in their position and worrying about coming down rather than ours and trying to go up. Does anybody disagree?
Not necessarily. To put it another way, if I was offered Luton or the mackems I’d pick the mackems. Just look at the infrastructure of one compared to the other.

They aren’t currently set up for long term prem survival. They have no players with top flight experience. The big issue that Giles has is that Luton’s wing backs will become a back 5, we’ve seen it under Robson years ago. He won’t get to showcase his crossing very often. His defending will be tested and if found wanting that’s his prem career effectively over. It’s an enormous gamble and I personally feel it’s the wrong club for him to show his talents

People said similar about Tav when he joined Bournemouth, look how they and Tav did. Good look to RG wherever he ends up.
The difference is that Bournemouth at least had a fighting chance because they had a bunch of players that had prem experience. I felt Bournemouth would be relegated, they outdid themselves but they also took some right pastings too. They could have sunk mentally from that, but some players knew they could compete at that level and got though it. I don’t think the Luton players have that to fall back on.

Bournemouth had no chance, according to most people on here and elsewhere, same as people are saying about Luton, we don’t know how things will work, it's all opinions and assumptions. Good luck to both of them.

I think Luton will stay up, they’ll make Kenilworth an awful place to go. They’ll all be bang up for it and there’s absolutely no pressure on them. It’s three of Everton, Bournemouth, Burnley, Palace, Sheffield United for me.
So Luton will survive coz they have a $hithole of a ground?

That’s an interesting way of looking at it

Project Yo-Yo
It could work.

With us Giles has at least one season in the championship.. then no guarantee we take him to the prem with us.

With Luton he is in the prem (with the wages) he can showcase his talents on that stage and they might stay up.

If they get relegated he might have the option to join a prem club or bounce back up with Luton.

more likely to play in the prem for more years for more money

I don't see Luton staying up, unless there are a few established teams that have bizarrely bad seasons, something which helped the likes of Bournemouth and Forest last season, but I can still understand why he'd go there.

More money, more exposure and it's slightly closer to home for him.

I think he and Luton will struggle against better opposition, but I'd wish him well on an individual level.

It’s also not what I said. It’s a tiny pitch where the crowd (all 639 of them) are right on top of you. Many a team have survived by making their home ground a fortress.

Teams in the prem like time on the ball and space to exploit. None of that there.

At champ level I think the small pitch is an advantage. At prem level I think players are generally more technical and can work better in small spaces. I’d say it’s a disadvantage against a team like City or a team with pacy wingers

Yeah teams like City etc will destroy them, but they’d destroy everyone. I can’t see teams like Wolves, Everton, Bournemouth etc going there and winning.

Should have included Wolves actually, I think they’re in trouble this season.

Smaller pitch teams like Everton’s and wolves directness will get them up a smaller pitch quicker.

They largely bullied their way to promotion, but teams like Everton for all their faults will bully back and with better quality. Onana has better technical ability than Nakamba, Calvert-Lewin has better technical ability than Carlton Morris and Tarkowski is more technical than Lockyer. But all those Everton players are just as physical or maybe more.

Luton aren’t going to be bullying teams, they’re also not going to be able to grab at corners which was a huge part of their game in offence and defence

The Premiership is the Premiership, I’m no Gibbo saying they are going to ‘smash the league’ but what’s to say enough teams have a week off and just can’t adjust going to a ground likes theirs and they scrape enough points at home to survive? Job Done…I’m sure he’ll whip in at the very least 3 pin point crosses that get the Match of the Day commentators repeating to them themselves about how good the cross was. That’s all he needs. Struggling side or not his delivery at times is unmatched. Roll on another season at Luton or sold on again for a similar price if they go down. Boys been sent out on loan past 3 seasons so is very used to turning up to a new team / dressing room and just getting on with it. We all have a very biased opionion on ‘us’ / ‘the Boro’ and as good as a season he had last season then putting that bias aside, I can’t really blame the lad. He’s not homegrown. He’s not from here. He has no affliction. Wolves is his home club. If I was a Boro out cast sent on loan for 3 seasons who’d just had a great one in the league below and the league above come calling (never mind it being the Prem) then only if Boro wheren’t interested I’d always back myself and take the higher offer so good for him if he takes it. Who in the real world wouldn’t? We need a LB either way so hopefully we get an even better version of Giles this season and never look back. If not hopefully we get promoted next season, they come down and we can reassess the LB slot and see if we still want him for a similar price? We where blessed with the loans we had last season and maybes if we went up then we would of bought the majority of them but we didn’t go up and as a Championship club then sadly Giles, Archer, Ramsey, Steffen did enough to naturally out grow us and our resources. At the very least the recruitment got it very right with them 4 for the first time in a long time so hopefully it was the start of good things and they do it all again. Let’s never forget Archers loan was only the back up to trying to just initially buy him in January but been rejected so onwards and upwards. UTB. Up the new Kieron Scott era and the heavy emphasis on scouting out the next big thing. Up Danksy aswell though for the crack for just remembering all them next big things from his previous clubs and enriching us with that knowledge. In Carrick we trust. Johnny Woodgate is a red. Leooooo Leeeeeo Leeeeooo etc etc etc We are currently watching some of the best football I can ever remember from many a season just past and long may it continue. If Giles at LB for 5m+ for a Championship club isn’t ment to be then it sadly isn’t ment to be. Hopefully we’ll somehow replace him with better for cheaper and then wisely somehow invest them savings elsewhere. UTFB!!!

Flip side of that argument is they will also highlight and discuss his deficiencies defensively and I’d expect at least 70 goals and probably many more to be dissected

It's nonsense. Luton are a far better prospect than us. Coming to Boro is gambling on getting in to the PL to be able to have the chance to prove he's a PL player. At Luton he will be there immediately. Even getting battered every week at Luton and everything goes well here there is a very high likelihood that we'd get battered every week anyway.

Anyone thinking a championship side is a better prospect than a PL side is kidding themselves. 1 assist in the PL is worth 10 in the championship for enhancing a reputation. He's been one of the top assisters in the championship 2 years running and the best PL prospect he has is Luton. More championship seasons will do nothing for him so he's just betting on which team will get promoted in the next couple of years. 1 season in 15 for us in the PL says it probably won't be us.

and by that rationale 1 defensive mistake in the prem is 10 times worse than in the championship.

Football doesn’t work like that, Luton had zero seasons in 15-20 in the top flight they still went up.

It’s very likely they’ll be under severe pressure, most games, they are one of the least technical squads to get promoted. They’re also probably the least top flight experienced squads. So it’s no wonder people expect it to be a torrid season for them.

It could destroy reputations and/or confidence for some of those players. It’s not outlandish to recognise that yes he’ll get bigger wages for a year, and yes he’ll get 30+ prem games, but I don’t think it will be enjoyable. Leicester was probably a better bet, in that they have a prem quality squad, if they go up it won’t be so torrid a first season

The comparisons with Bournemouth are ludicrous really. Bournemouth were a team that had a couple of years in the prem, and had parachute money. Their promotion squad had a value over 5x more than this Luton one according to Transfermarkt. That’s why people think Luton will struggle, they have on paper the lowest value squad ever to be promoted to the prem.

I'm not bias but I can't understand why he has gone to a premier league team instead of a playoff contender?

He has no ambition.

Good luck to him but he won't be guaranteed premier league football with that attitude in the long term...wait...erm...

Good luck to him, I dont think anyone who wants to play at the highest level makes any other decision. If he produces the goods he will be there for a long time, if he doesn't that might be his only chance.

If he's as good/ bad as this thread suggests he will have more/ no opportunities ever again :D
