Looks like we couldn't afford Giles??

5mil is a massive outlay for a champo club to spend on a LB. You won't see any others doing that (none parachute payment clubs).

It's also not just the 5mil. It's the 3-4 year deal that comes with it. I'd imagine he's on a minimum of 20k a week. I'd expect even more.

Yes it's laughable that we once spent more on the likes of Flint / Saville and Fletcher. To think those 3 alone cost 21mil and big wages. Yet fortunately we've moved away from those 'pay anything' days.

It's a shame. Yet no point breaking the finance structure. Gibson isn't made of money. He's losing a fortune as it is.
To be fair, as much as I liked Giles he is not worth that sort of money. I think that the Aussie lad will provide more assists and will score a few too. Coulson may turn out to be an option but with VDB we could go with 3 defenders, Jones and Silvera wide with Gilbert at 10and Forrs up top with Hackney, Barlaser, McGree and Payero vying for the defensive/central midfield slots. There are clearly other options we are trying to buy/loan and with this current coaching/management set up we will be fine.

Wasn’t hoppe a couple of million pound punt just last summer which was not really wanted by the manger at the time so must have been a Scott signing?

New TV deal is supposed to give us enough money to paint the bogs and buy a year’s supply of loo rolls but I can’t see that happening!! Lol 😂

The playing staff wages bill in 2020/21 was £31m - OK it may be a bit less now, but it would have been at least £25m in 2022/3 - quite a few players will be on £20k to 25k/week wages. It would not surprise me if we lose £8m a year without transfer fees.

Last season we did pay some fees for Barlaser, Clarke, Roberts and McGree if January 2022 is counted. We also lost revenue in lockdown as some of the season ticket was paid back and no match day tickets for 18 months.

M guess is that Giles would have wanted around £30k/week plus there was up to £5m transfer fee - not impossible for us to match, but It would have taken probably all our transfer kitty and a decent chunk of our available salary funds.

That article didn't say anything and certainly nothing to suggest we couldn't afford him. We probably couldn't, so what?!? I wish we could've but he's signed for a prem league club. Let's move on.

Chuba is the only current player in that range. McNair and Howson are in the 15-20k range. After that no one else is above 15k.

We’ve cut our cloth.

Clearly Giles ‘unfollowing’ us last week was the point negotiations with Wolves came to an end and Luton’s bid became too rich for us.

We can’t on one hand want a brave new structure then on the other want us to break our framework straight away
Remember we are not paid £10m in one go. Neithet do we pay out in one go either. So we received maybe £3m for Tav last season etc.
Do you recall how much Steve Gibson said running costs every year over income from ticket sales and commercial? It is a tightrope negotiated by all Championship clubs. The new tv deal will offer clubs a boost.

Two sides to this. Firstly cash flow, which is normally as you described. However selling clubs push for more or even all up front, while buying clubs try to evenly spread the payment terms. But there are no hard rules, it’s all in the negotiation.

Secondly is ffp where we do receive the full Tav money onto our accounts immediately but players we buy have their transfer fees amortised over the length of contract so a 3m signing on a 3 year contract will only show 1m immediately on the accounts, regardless if we pay it up front or pay in instalments.

BM

If we have a 25 player squad on an average of say £13k/week - thats £16.25m if we add in another £3.75m for managerial staff and juniors thats £20m a year. Quite a reduction from the £28m in 2022 accounts. The £28m however includes all staff. We will have to see when the accounts come out. Obviously there are other costs of running a club.

On the revenue side for this season

£8m Season tickets
£5m other tickets
£9m TV/Radio
£2m Mercandising
£2m food and drink
£5m Corporate revenues /advertising/sponsorship

Total £31m

The selling club will always push for the highest possible fee. If the fee is paid in instalments then the selling club will factor the debt so they get most of the cash right away. MFC does this with most transfer fees received.

I don't think payment terms - instalments - will be a stumbling block in most cases.

With regard to Giles, it's a case of the fee and wages being too high for Boro to sanction.

Personally don't think it's a case of not being able to afford him, we could, but buying him for £5m with £20k week wages will mean instead of getting another 3-4 players in (assume signings and loan fees) we could only get 2.......which the club realise is not a good option.

I agree with the club if this is the case. He's not worth that, he's a LB who can't defend very well, and I'm sure there are better players out there for a fraction of the cost (over to you and your team Mr Scott).

May also point to the probability of Chuba staying - if we received about £15-20m for him we could have put some of this towards a deal for Giles.......dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

What about the circa £10m we’ll have generated from season ticket sales?
On average Championship clubs are making a loss of between 40-50m per season. Revenue from season tickets and shirt sales doesn't come close to covering it. Money in from Spence etc will be staggered so at least we can expect a few million a year from Levy's grubby pocket.

While Giles was really good for us last season, he wasn't outstanding like Chuba or Archer. Certainly not good enough to break the bank
Yes lots of assists but no goals, and he appeared to me to have a tail off in aggression moving forward in the latter matches of the season.

Let's be fair, nobody other then Steve Gibson knows if we could have afforded him or not. MAYBE just MAYBE we offered the same deal as Luton did and he chose to go there?
