Liam Roberts having medical today

I don't get why Valdes gets pelters from some fans, it's not like he dropped clangers every week, he didn't, I can only think of one real clanger. He was better than Guzan and even his worst day was better than Lumley's best
He was the best keeper we had in years, infact he is one of the best of his generation. Just his attitude was terrible which is why none of our fans seem to rate him

I wonder if we could get Randolph back, he never even played at all last year, not even one minute. Only made the bench in Europa league, and didn't even get that far in the league. Doesn't get a look in for Ireland either, and only 35.

Contract up next June, maybe a loan with buy clause if we go up.

He left for "non footballing reasons" and I wouldn't want him anywhere near our club (including the other wrongun's we've signed as well).

Happier posing for instagram photos with Alexandrea Burke than actually playing football these days.

He wasn’t one of the best of his generation for us.. or Man Utd. Coincidence that the Barcelona team he played in was one of the best teams in a generation?

You don’t play in the best team in a generation without being one of the best yourself. Those Barcelona sides were always so open at the back it’s not like he wasn’t a key part of that side. He went to Man Utd at the wrong time and barely played but he looked fantastic for us considering he had barely played in years
Joe Lumley would look pretty good if his team had 80% possession and only had to save 2 shots per game. They'd win 4-2 every week.
Numerous league titles, champions leagues and a World Cup as well as 2 or 3 goal keeper of the year awards suggests he didn’t just do nothing in goal, as anyone who regularly watched that Barcelona side would confirm this

he was still a bloody good keeper, regardless if he was in a great barca team.

Valdes one of the best of his generation?

Have I just read that?

Wow.

Valdes was a very good keeper in his prime, but my goodness, to even compare him with the likes of Neuer/Casillas/Buffon at the same time is beyond laughable.

Freddie Woodman looks to be signing for Preston from Newcastle. He's a good keeper for this division. Hopefully that doesn't mean they're keeping Darlow.

Valdes played nearly 400 times for Barcelona when they were the best team in the World. You don't make that squad without being a top keeper. He was particularly good with the ball, something that is far more common today than it was then, and as a sweeper-keeper. Playing for a top team as a keeper is about being able to maintain concentration and save the 1 or 2 shots that come your way in 90 mins. Some excellent keepers fail at that and don't make the top level because of it. Conversely they might not be great if they have 20 shots against them per game playing for a weaker team instead (as Valdes did for the 1st time in his career when he played for us). He was our Player of the Month in October of that season.

I don't think he was as good as Neuer/Casillas/Buffon but he was an exceptional keeper and if he hadn't have been Spanish/German/Italian then he would've had more international recognition as well. It's easy to dismiss someone that isn't even the best in their country but you can be the 2nd best in the World and never play international football if the best is the same nationality. It doesn't do Ederson's reputation much harm though.

I'm not claiming he wasn't a good keeper, he clearly was, but he didn't win the World Cup or the Euros in any real sense.
He never left the bench in either tournament, he only has the medals on a technicality.

Leicester want millions for Iversen, Preston can't afford it.
He's got three years on his contract at Leicester.. don't think they want him sitting on the bench. That being said it sounds like Roberts will be challenging for a start (which is how it should be imo)

Good luck Liam Roberts & welcome to the mighty Boro
All the way from Edward George Smith (our 1st ever 1st team GK) v Lincoln on the 2nd September 1899 to the present day he becomes our 82nd GK

When he makes his 1st team appearence he will become the 974th registered player to make his debut
