Leaving England

I’d go Norway, Singapore (but only for a couple of years, cos the heat would then do me in) or New Zealand. Reality is family and friends too important to me, so that would keep me from going.
I’d happily settle for moving back to the North East at the minute, Newcastle way, if I can drag my wife up.

Given the poor Covid response killing people and the upcoming brexit depression likely to cause misery, job losses and a downgrading of society, has anyone considered leaving England?

If so where would you plan to go?

Me, I REALLY want too go to Singapore. I absolutely love the place and the ex pat lifestyle out there. There are also a load of jobs in my industry so it wouldn't be too hard with VISAs etc. Sadly the other half won't move at all so I'm stuck here.

Be particularly interested to see who chooses another EU country!
I’ve been living in Madrid for about 18 months now and have no intention of coming back any time soon. The UK really doesn’t look like a good place to be at the moment.

Not sure I agree with "grass being always greener" - I've moved three times in the last 16 years, each new place being better than the last (in my opinion).

Yeah it's more the mindset and the lexicon of that particular phrase I find annoying.

When it comes to places to live I find it difficult to believe that anyone feels their current location is the best suited to them, out of all potential locations on Earth. Don't get me wrong I'm fortunate to have been born where I have but there must be 1000s of places I'd rather live. Contentment probably is under-rated but it never hurts to aspire to something more. As it's just my wife and I I'd probably feel different if we were in close, regular contact with family etc but I've never felt particularly wedded to one place.

One of the things we have done during lockdown is create a 5 and 10 year plan, within those plans are a 18 month spell in Dubai and use that as a base for work and exploration of Asia, Africa and Australasia.

I’m currently learning Spanish with a plan of a 6 month self drive tour of the America’s starting in Alaska down to Chile and back up to Newfoundland which is part of the latter plan.

We’ll downsize at some point and move more rural and also look to buy property in Apulia and have a little bolt hole around Seville or Córdoba once our pensions come through.

We’ve tightened our belts a little in the short term to hopefully feel the benefits in the long.

Cyprus about 5/10 minutes drive away from Coral Bay but as I voted to leave the EU that would make me a hypocrite. Would like to move into one of the many little villages between here and Whitby if the right property came available.

I know it very well, I also know The Norman Conquest (or the Mortgage Arms as my dad calls it) :D

I considered the area between Arcachon & Bordeaux a few years back, need to be close to an airport and Bordeaux would have been fine.
I find Arcachon to touristy and are presently at Mimizan, just below. Although we like the area, I would like to be further in land.

Finny - isn’t Revel the town you have just been on holiday at?

I retire early next year. Had no intentions of going anywhere but I simply can’t continue to live in a country that is so corrupt, uncaring and unfair. Too many of the population now don’t seem to give a fig for those facing persecution and disadvantage. Law and Order is not the priority it was with young kids in particular having no respect. Add to that the looming disaster that is Brexit and we are pretty certain now that we will move somewhere nicer and warmer to see out our days. Will miss the match days but the pro’s far outweigh the con’s. I do worry how many of us will be thinking similar but i suppose the Brexiteers will just say off you trot.

God there's some moaning minnies on here!!
Last time I looked, there certainly does not appear to be a mass exidous.

And who is being 'persecuted' by the way ?

Now you could do a lot worse than be in San Sebastian. There and Munich are places I will divide my extended holidays during retirement 👍

Ah, my mate does that (he's ex REME I'm ex RAF, I work in oil and gas now did 5 weeks in Luanda last autumn, it was fine to be honest. Stay safe out there mate.
Interesting mm
A lad I used to work with said about New Zealand it was like Sunday all the time before the shops started opening. So quiet. He was the most laid back guy ever. A joint and his guitar and he was happy but he found it boring. Thats a lot of years ago though. Obviously changed.
Not so boring now. Shops open on Saturday mornings, most right through Saturday and some open Sundays too. But, and its a big but, Kiwi's love and cherish their leisure time, be it boating, yachting, fishing, biking etc. The weekend is far more important than the week.
