Leaving England

We'd like to be in Spain or Canaries too at some point. That said, the States might be more likely as my wife is from there. So whilst not sure on destination, the likelihood of remaining in the UK forever is slim. As much as I love many factors here, coast, countryside, some nice towns and cities, plus family and friends of course, I'd rather spend time in another country and experience a different culture. It won't be for a while, when there's nothing more I can give to and nothing more I can get from a place, that's when we'll go
I hope you've got good medical cover if you come back. It's not getting any cheaper.

Ah, my mate does that (he's ex REME I'm ex RAF, I work in oil and gas now did 5 weeks in Luanda last autumn, it was fine to be honest. Stay safe out there mate.
Oh nice I was infantry, a lot of the jobs are very quiet well most of them are to be honest, I just love the routine it brings and it keeps me off the beer! 🍺

What part of France are you looking at ?
You need to realise that a lot of the rural parts like the Dordogne may be paradise in summer but in winter can be very grim.
I tend to avoid Dordogneshire, too many Brits for my liking.

We are looking at the Landes region, but not the tourist hotspots. We have a good idea of the area we want to be in and have visited them out of season.

Obviously something we would need to investigate extensively, but it's not something we consider to be a barrier to the notion of returning, but I fully accept your point. I know how much my mother in law has to pay each month for her insulin for example, and it's not an insignificant portion of her monthly income

Switzerland would have been a good choice. I've a mate who used to live there and it was great. He's still got a decent sized house there and his wife is still working there as they are trying to get a Swiss passport.
They fly either way every two weeks to see each other etc

Yeah I've a lot of friends who live there, including a few who do what your describing. That was one of the reasons we didn't go there as it would have meant I'd be living in the UK and Mrs Jumpers in Basel and we didn't fancy that seperate lives, meet up on a weekend lark.

My best mate and his wife used to do Montreal & Toronto, but have now minimized the distance to Basel & Paris, but I still wouldn't fancy it.

Just settling back in to living full time in the UK. The only place I'd consider shifting to permanently where I've spent a considerable amount of time is Ireland, Norway was a great experience too but of the others I've spent a good stretch in I'd have to say there's no chance that is relocate there, that's USA, Singapore and Holland.

I enjoyed Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden too and from what I've seen I'd have no problem giving them a longer run.

We're looking at spending long breaks abroad and Spain looks the best option so far.

My girlfriend is German and from Munich. It's still early days for us, but I'd move there in a heartbeat. I've no idea how easy it would be to get a visa/job etc...as I've not looked...
I've always wanted to live in the Canaries but as others have mentioned, I think I'd be a little sentimental about the seasonal whether in the UK. Munich seems to have much better weather than in the North East, and I think I could live with the weather and views in the winter of the Alps.

Could have gone to Sydney years ago but didn't for family reasons, as things turned out I wish I'd gone. Would like a second home in France, with a view to retiring there.

That would be a good choice... not too far from Bordeaux which is an increasingly popular city.

I'm the other way, I've lived in a few different countries as a kid and worked in a few different ones. Now I'm settled on the South Coast of the UK, and there is nowhere I would rather be in the world. Its sunny, peaceful, great countryside, people are lovely and its more relaxed than any city life.

If I did have to move, I wouldn't want to go anywhere European, its just England with different stuff really. It would have to be a fundamental change. Went to Kenya 15 years ago on holiday and loved it. If I was single, I'd move there and enjoy a completely different lifestyle to a European one.

You obviously know France, we are on the coast about a hour south of Bordeaux and a hour north of San Sebastian, Spain. We have looked further in land at properties in the Morcenx area. The town must have a municipal sports arena with either a local football or rugby team (amateur). A couple of the outlying villages tick all the boxes.

Singapore - great noodles!!! - but its pretty sanitised place to live. In had a 3 month sabbatical there about 20 years ago and was going up the wall with boredom after a month.

New Zealand for me.
yeah, found that as well. way too much concrete and very expensive

A lad I used to work with said about New Zealand it was like Sunday all the time before the shops started opening. So quiet. He was the most laid back guy ever. A joint and his guitar and he was happy but he found it boring. Thats a lot of years ago though. Obviously changed.

I've been in the US for more than 20 years and had more than enough of it. I'm retiring next year and moving back to the North East of England - it's still home, even if I haven't lived there for 40 years.
Lucky man, everyone seems to want to leave but I'd happily go back to the UK.
I suppose it depends upon ones living and working conditions.
I never expected to be in the USA for this length of time but it's going to be hard for me to leave due to jobs etc.
