Leaving England

Me and Mrs FatFrank are looking into emigrating to Australia in the next 2 years, Melbourne to be precise. You still get all four seasons and the city life, which we're both keen on.
We both have professions that are on the required list, we have no young family and to be honest, we're both pig sick of England.

A lad I used to work with said about New Zealand it was like Sunday all the time before the shops started opening. So quiet. He was the most laid back guy ever. A joint and his guitar and he was happy but he found it boring. Thats a lot of years ago though. Obviously changed.

Know what he means but has NZ has the outdoor life which would appeal to me. Food just as good as here and the wines! Property prices have been rocketing up in the Auckland and Wellington environs. And you also have the dangers of earthquakes too.

Yep, actively looking at the moment. First choice is probably Sweden, closely followed by anywhere in Europe which isn't England ;)

I worked in Sweden for years and cant think of anywhere more boring.
The grass isnt always greener and most europeans will tell you that the uk is a beautiful country and theyd be correct.
Its also relatively low cost of living 👍

You obviously know France, we are on the coast about a hour south of Bordeaux and a hour north of San Sebastian, Spain. We have looked further in land at properties in the Morcenx area. The town must have a municipal sports arena with either a local football or rugby team (amateur). A couple of the outlying villages tick all the boxes.

Check out a place called Revel and surrounding areas - ticks a lot of your boxes

We’ve talked about retiring to France for years and have looked at properties whilst we are out here.

It is funny though, spoke to a few French who would swap with us. Don’t know why.

My french partner was of that opinion. She then lived ten years in York with me before she realised why i was wanting too leave.

Just a word of advice. As there will almost certainly be no extension to the Brexit transition period Brits resident in France must apply for a residency card (titre de séjour accord de retreat du Royaume-Uni de l’UE) which will maintain their key rights as EU citizens to live and work in France.

Applications for the card will be open til end June 2021, BUT you must have established your MAIN residence in France by the end of 2020.

If you establish your residency after this date you will be treated as a ‘third-country national’ and stricter visa and residency rules will apply.

Hope that helps.

Bought a place in Spain and was there for 5 years and had a great time , but realised that I felt better having a base in England and renting for a few months abroad if I got itchy feet.

I know it very well, I also know The Norman Conquest (or the Mortgage Arms as my dad calls it) :D

I considered the area between Arcachon & Bordeaux a few years back, need to be close to an airport and Bordeaux would have been fine.

I swapped England for Spain when I was 22 and it's one of the best decisions I've made, although Barcelona has declined in the last few years, totally different atmosphere to when I first moved. The main reason I moved was just the weather, I can't stand the cold or wind and the dark days in the UK, it really effects my mood and mentality, no idea why I'm like that because most of my mates have no problems coping with the UK weather at all.

Given the poor Covid response killing people and the upcoming brexit depression likely to cause misery, job losses and a downgrading of society, has anyone considered leaving England?

If so where would you plan to go?

Me, I REALLY want too go to Singapore. I absolutely love the place and the ex pat lifestyle out there. There are also a load of jobs in my industry so it wouldn't be too hard with VISAs etc. Sadly the other half won't move at all so I'm stuck here.

Be particularly interested to see who chooses another EU country!
I think Singapore is a really good place for you. Would suit you to an immeasurable degree. Apart from driving around in a flash motor as they wouldn't let you.

You really are convinced of a brexit depression. Did you mean to say brexit renaissance ?
But you be happy with your opinion stated as fact. Is it made more credible by lumping all your Brexit doom and gloom opinions together with Covid in the same sentence ?

Depends on your definition of interesting I guess - where did you live?

I've been impressed with the quality of life over there when been out there working. Comes at a price but worth in my opinion.

This is where the thread goes off the rails - please don't bite SmallTown, we've been through this a hundred times before.
I do get the trolls, I forgot @HundredRoom was one of my fan club.

I guess the "wanting to leave" thread is me trying to put my money where my mouth is. I believe Britain has already become a poorer country in money ways, not just economically but socially too. It is divided and fractured. I also believe that brexit will bring about a sharp economic downturn (Along with many people). That's my plan to minimise the effects fo the downturn. By trying to leave this poor, regressive, corrupt little country

"minimise the effects by leaving" ? Have to agree with you there.

I retire early next year. Had no intentions of going anywhere but I simply can’t continue to live in a country that is so corrupt, uncaring and unfair. Too many of the population now don’t seem to give a fig for those facing persecution and disadvantage. Law and Order is not the priority it was with young kids in particular having no respect. Add to that the looming disaster that is Brexit and we are pretty certain now that we will move somewhere nicer and warmer to see out our days. Will miss the match days but the pro’s far outweigh the con’s. I do worry how many of us will be thinking similar but i suppose the Brexiteers will just say off you trot.

We decided that if we were going to live in a country that is so corrupt, uncaring and unfair, it would be the UK rather than the US. I rather regret not taking out Dutch citizenship when I lived in Holland.
