Labour WILL renationalise railways!

I can. With the massive drop of in passenger numbers on peak travel card prices they will never be able to make a profit and keep a good service up. Im all for it. 👍

The profits that German and French companies make from running our railways subsidise the French and German Railways. How this was ever sold as a good idea is beyond me. We subsidise the railways to a far greater extent than we ever did BR.

On a related subject, best explanation yet of the theory of "Trickle Down Economics" - we drink champagne and then p!ss on you.

Thanks oh generous benefactors your p!ss is so refreshing...

To be fair, having spent all of last weekend with a group of Germans I don’t think nationalisation is the panacea we think it is. Yes the €9 euro fare thing was stunning but they all hated DB. Said it was badly ran and they got no alerts on the frequently delayed trains

It isn't a panacea for the problems with the railways. It would however remove this failed experiment and we could get the rail service we were prepared to fund. Not simply pour money into the pockets of profiteers.

Would rather they plough money into taking busses back into public ownership and local transport.
Trains are local transport. It should be noted that companies like the First group control trains and buses in Cities like Bristol = Monopolies where they fleece customers and make lavish profits from working people.

I used to be able to travel from Exeter to Darlington without it costing me a weeks wages. Try getting discounted tickets ahead of time on Cross Country you have to be constantly watching their website.

You ne

You never experienced the misery of British Rail pre privatisation then?

Ah, the typical comeback from Tories who believe that privatisation works despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Like @Nero stated above - the East Coast Mainline for 8 of the last 10 years has being state controlled. For the majority of that time it has been a better service.

Don't be afraid Pete. Without us haemorrhaging rail profits to European shareholders we might be able to invest in our railways and also give staff proper pay rises - no more strikes!

I was in Munich in July and Dusseldorf in August and can genuninely say there were no issues at all with the 9-euro tickets, there weren't delays that I experienced and everthing ran as smoothly as it always does when I'm in Germany.

Inter City back in the day was profitable so the East coast mainline making a profit is hardly something to trumpet.

Yes Nationalisation = no stikes. Right oh.

Plus do you really want Politicians running the railways.

I don't know what the answer is. I know that privatisation hasn't worked. Looking right now for an anytime return from Manchester to London tomorrow is £370. How can that be? The pricing structure is nonsense. I think the only other business that operates in this way is Boro with their ticket sales. If you buy in advance it can be reasonable (never cheap and rarely convenient) but at least you can get from A to B on the right day. Trying to book a specific train, booking spontaneously or heaven forbid, requiring any flexibility, then you're stuck paying the any time prices. The current pricing model just doesn't work ad I'm sure they could get more people using the trains if they had better pricing and it was more reliable. Other than travelling to London though, pretty much every single other journey is more convenient to drive and it is also much cheaper particularly if there is more than one person travelling.

It's a fair point but its how many services work out prices, just look at how airlines charge.

It's a vast improvement on the previous ticketing policy , I bet many have forgotten back in the day the cost of a return or single was pretty much the same price.
