Italy v England at the San Siro

It is so disappointing that Southgate is in charge of England when we have our best potential in many years. His starting 11 tonight is simply awful - how do players who can’t get a club game start for their country? Sadly a couple of hammerings from sub standard Italy and Germany teams might be what we need to come to our senses!
How is it awful? Aside from Maguire, everyone is first choice for their club and playing well.

Who, pray tell, would you have picked instead?

Well yeh, I guess you could call it that

Relegation though affects seeding for the Euros, so we`ll no doubt face a harder group

Call it what you want but this could harm future tournaments
Gotta bear the best to be the best.
Every single football match is "made up" if you're going to use a daft argument like that.

The same attitude England took for the first 20 years of the World Cup, missing out on 5 opportunities to be world champions because of parochial arrogance.
Competative games are different to friendlies, beating San Marino in a friendly, then saying we’re gonna win the World Cup would be madness..
the same should be said if it is the other way around.

What lose to San Marino and then win the World Cup? That would be ludicrous.

A relatively new tournament.

Being new doesn't mean it's a friendly.
”UEFA devised the tournament as a means to eliminate international friendlies” - comes across as a Mickey Mouse tourney. Like the international intertoto league/cup/shield/plaque/laminated a4 print out

Except up until now we have played top countries rather than cannon fodder we used to pitch up against in friendly games.

At least games against cannon fodder, in fact any true friendly, allowed us to experiment and try players before major tournaments without having to worry about 'relegation '.

And people moaned that we were having to miss club football for meaningless friendlies.

The Nations League has been a great addition, just needs to overcome the attitudes of set in their ways fans.
