Italy v England at the San Siro

At least games against cannon fodder, in fact any true friendly, allowed us to experiment and try players before major tournaments without having to worry about 'relegation '.
Gareth Southgate should be brave enough to do what’s right for the team’s future without “worrying about relegation”. It seems clear he’s avoided Toney and played safe though because I suspect he is worried.

And people moaned that we were having to miss club football for meaningless friendlies.

The Nations League has been a great addition, just needs to overcome the attitudes of set in their ways fans.
Friendlies before major finals are *usually* after the season has finished though.
And I personally moan just as much about missing club football for this meaningless tournament.
Although it's less meaningless for clubs needing it as a backdoor qualification. Even then, Scottish fans I know didn't care about it until the play-offs.

Those friendlies are still there, we played Austria and Romania in friendlies before the Euros last year.

The shambles of the Qatar World Cup is nothing to do with the Nations League.

A few years ago this would have been a huge deal as it’s one of the top international fixtures at an iconic venue but now hardly a mention. Esp on the eve of a would cup as well

It shows how down graded international football is becoming.

It was the euro final only a while back and the country went batshit over it

I didn't say it was.
To me these matches are just as meaningless as friendlies.
The only exception is if the tournament is needed as a back door route into a major tournament.
Even then, the system is that convoluted you don't know if it is a viable option until further down the line. We might regret not doing well in this group if we fail to qualify for Euro 24 the normal way. But that seems too abstract to get excited about at this point in time.

How is it awful? Aside from Maguire, everyone is first choice for their club and playing well.

Who, pray tell, would you have picked instead?
Walker - not started last 3 games for City - plays right back when he starts - bit part centre back
McGuire - enough said
Saka - right wing for Arsenal - what is he doing left back only Southgate knows
Foden - not starting at City
Sterling - lightweight ineffective not good enough
That’s half the outfield team.
Play a centre back at centre back (Coady, Tomoro)
Pick a full back at full back ( Chilwell , Trippier)
Up front Abraham, Mount, Grealish all better than Sterling.
A lot of talent wasted on a super cautious manager

Foden has started 7 of City's 8 league games.

Sterling has scored more than Abraham, Mount and Grealish this season.

Two woeful sides.

Bet the people present are praying for floodlight failure.

England may as well withdraw from Qatar on moral grounds, at least then they would be doing something useful.
