ICC Cricket World Cup Starts at 9.30 am This Morning

The format of this World Cup is dreadful.

I know it's only this way to ensure that the big teams don't accidentally get knocked out too early, but it's such a drawn out affair.

England have effectively been out since the 26th, and we're still got 3 games to play over the next two weeks.

We'd have been out in a proper group stage anyway, so I'm not complaining about it because England have done badly, I just think it's dull.

Same as 2019 though.

The problem is our top players just dont plsy any 50 over cricket thanks to the hundred. With the exception of malan they dont seem to be able to adjust from 20 overs to 50 batting, and the bowlers are used to 4 overs rather than 10.
Greed has got us where we are
I’m sure we’ve discussed this before, but the counties created and endorsed the Hundred themselves, as they were almost all struggling financially. Maybe the Hundred wasn’t the answer, and not at the expense of 50 over domestic cricket, but there is only so long all 18 counties can survive on just nuggets of T20 Blast revenue.

Fair enough, I honestly thought they had binned it, I’m sure it was seriously talked about. But looks like they just skipped 2021 in the end, probably cos of covid.
Same, am I right in thinking we don't automatically qualify for 2027 either?

At least we might have some confidence building wins in the lead up to that tournament but I'm not sure how much we'll learn about the side.

You will almost certainly qualify for the 2027 World Cup, especially as they have increased the number of teams to 14 for that tournament

I thought the top xx teams from this tournament qualify automatically, with the others needing to go through a qualifying tournament?

I like this format, most of the games are meaningful and it allows teams like Afghanistan and the Netherlands to develop. It should ensure that the best two teams contest the final too.

Also in 2027 the winning team will have to play 6 games in round 1 5 games in round 2 (super 6s) a semi and a final making 13 in total compared with 11 in this tournament. Ridiculous amount of games. The super 6s round only eliminates 2 teams.

Maybe they'll revert to two groups of seven?

i think two groups of 7, top team into the semis, 2 +3 in each group play a quater final so theres a reward for finishing top ensuring less dead rubbers
Or the top 4 from each go into the quarter final knockout.

My main gripe is the restricted amount of games per day due to TV demands. The world cup could be over in half the time, cutting costs to each country's cricket association.

One thing this competition has highlighted is how far away we are when it comes to stadia.
