How long do we give Warnock then?

Where has this ‘next season’ spiel come from? Last season when results were poor he was banging on about how players like Howson etc would ‘enjoy next season’, yet here we are 6 games in, 1 win and it’s being written off already.

He’s been backed hugely, he’s got players through the door and we’re still *****.

It’s the consistent diluting of expectations from one season to the next I can’t stand. If we genuinely looked like we were building something I could forgive it. But we don’t, we’re just rolling the dice again.
It depends what those expectations are though? Were people expecting us to get promoted this season? There's very little evidence on or off the field to back up that assumption in my opinion.

I think the appointment of Scott is the start of building something (although it's a long road, see Brentford). If results continue to be poor I'd actually expect Scott to be putting pressure on to remove Warnock but it depends how far advanced we are with his managerial targets.

The expectation was have a real crack at promotion under Warnock. We look like we’re consolidating in mid-table at best. If this is his last year and things are happening behind the scenes in regards to his successor , happy days. Have a gamble. If not we’re just wasting time.

I’d be moving heaven and earth to get Eddie Howe up here.

Problem is, there are 23 other teams all wanting to have a real crack at promotion as well.

I think we have improved the squad (slightly) this Summer and would expect our league position to reflect that at the end of the season (around 9th or 10th). Anything else will be a bonus. Squad looks very imbalanced still in my opinion and it doesn't seem that we've recruited with any particular style of play or system in mind.

In terms of "going for it" I've been surprised in general by Warnocks preference for attacking play, although a more pragmatic approach would be welcomed from time to time as well. Our best sides over the last 10 years have been based around a solid defence (Karanka, Pulis) and it seems we've completely abandoned that approach over the last year.

Not sure what point you're trying to make.

Howe was a success for 10 yrs at Bournemouth. It eventually turns sour for even the very best managers if they stay too long at the same club. (even Clough, Wenger, Mourinho).

Wilder did incredibly well for a number of seasons. The Daily Mirror has decided Brewster was one of the worst signings in Premier league history. Must be true then. Must also mean he is a crap manager.

Wilder for me - perfect fit

It has always felt really strange doing a complete squad re-build with a manager who is leaving at the end of the season and it feels like we have been 'in transition' as some put it for the last 3-4 years

Talk of 'transition' only really appears after a few winless weeks and floats around until the team win two or three on the spin and climb the league. I've been critical of Warnock and the performance/set up of the team in recent weeks but a couple of wins could see us really fly. There is quality in the squad so if we can settle on a shape and pick up a win or two there is still a long way to go. 120 points left to play for. And 126 points should be enough to get us promoted.

Why is he a perfect fit?
I genuinely don't see that at all.
Ex player who knows the club so would be happy to live in the area you would think .
Experienced manager who is serving his time with Burton and doing well .
Charismatic.
highly regarded in the game .
Knowledgeable.
Has contacts throughout the football world .
Ticks a few of my boxes .

I've never understood this idea that 'knowing the club' is an important factor. What is there to know about the club beyond the abilities and limitations of the players, who would largely be recruited just prior to or by the new manager anyway.

God there's some people on here that are more self righteous than the Geordies! We have no god given right to be up challenging for promotion. Yes we've made additions this year but we've also lost a lot of players. We don't appear to have anywhere near the squad strength that we did under Karanka or Robson, our last promotions. And our current manager has been in for less than 2 seasons! Yet some want him replaced for what? Do they see us suddenly getting a new manager who will get more out of this squad of players (who he would have no input into buying)? Or will a new manager come in and the club will suddenly have millions to throw at the squad!!??

People need to get real. We are a mid table champo club with broadly similar funds. We can't compete with the relegated clubs on parachute payments therefore we are trying to make marginal gains to hopefully get us competitive for the play off spots. Oh and we are only 6 games into the season and several players have been with us for only 1 week..!

All information available seems to be pointing to this being Warnock's last season, so we'll need a new manager in eight months anyway.

Karanka came in and transformed our defensive performance pretty much over night, with the same squad of players Mowbray had conceding freely and sliding towards leagues one.

I don't think anyone has us up challenging for the autos or having a God given right to be in the mix for the play-offs.

People are rightly questioning why, after signing pretty much a new first eleven, we are looking no different from January onwards, no set formation, very few goals, conceding daft goals, insufficient fullbacks, overrun in midfield.

Since early January we are pretty much on bottom six form. That isn't good enough with the squad available.

Caesium posted this 4 days ago, nothing's changed, nothing's different. Same failings, same midfield problems.

Time to go Neil. You just aren't up to it.

If he put as much energy into formation/tactics as he does jumping about when a decision goes against us then maybe we'd have a game plan.

Give him a few more matches, see if he can start stringing a few wins together. promotion hopefuls we aren't right now.
