Homophobic chanting in the South Stand yesterday

I think this thread shows that some people are far more offended by some things than others. Again, the chant mentioned is something I would never chant but then don't get offended when I hear it.

London did (probably still does) have rent boys just like many other cities will. Just like they will all have female prostitutes etc. That is surely factual rather than "hate". I personally don't see it as a "hate" crime regardless of a legal definition. If someone wants to label everybody from London as a rentboy then surely it's more stereotyping than hate? Certainly idiocy and narrow-mindedness.

Anyway, I think some on here very much get their knickers in a twist unless everybody lives by the exact same rules on what is offensive. I suspect the vast majority wouldn't chant it themselves but aren't offended by it either if they hear idiots singing it. Expecting everybody to be willing to report and fight against stuff is unrealistic in my opinion.

Ok then for a:

"town full of P***is
"n*****s"
"paedos"
"Cleveland sex abuse"
"Sl**s"
"ar** bandits"
"sp*g"
"nut job"

NO!

The chants and use of certain words is meant with "intent". Its not acceptable, whether you get offended by it or not. Casualising all of those things isnt acceptible. It might be OK amongst particular low life and their mates. But keep it out of football.

Idiot #3

You guys can call me an idiot as much as you want but I stand by my points:

1. I reckon it's the minority that would sing or use that language.

2. I also reckon it's the minority that are actually "offended" by that language.

3. I reckon the majority won't use it nor be that bothered if they hear it.

4. If it's a hate crime as suggested then as long as one person reports it then others don't need to. You don't need hundreds of people to report the same crime.

5. If the people in here getting so upset because they heard it have reported it (as they surely must have done) then others don't need to so people in here don't need to be under pressure to.

6. Just because people aren't "offended" or don't report things as crimes doesn't mean they think any other racist chants or comments are acceptable. The post above suggesting that is quite comical in that way.

Hello fur.
I reported my post to Rob for adjudication - in case I`de been too literal, but havent received any comeback.
I hope I got the message across.
Those who are on the receiving end find the insults demeaning, marginalising and disgusting. Those who legitimise prejudice by casualising it and dismissive are [inadvertently] complicit in the violence, hate and harrasment that those comments legitimise. Its like Braverman talking abouyt being "swamped" and "invasion" - we know what that lead to recently in Liverpool.

Regarding item 2 there is a misconception that people need to be personally offended to deem something inappropriate. You read all the time that people are personally offended but that's not what they're saying, they're saying it's wrong. I agree with them, but I am not "offended".

Not by me. I've repeatedly stated I would never sing it nor let my kids sing it.

But the tones used by some in here is that we all need to unite and report everything etc.

In my probably clumsy way, I'm trying to suggest that the majority would agree it's not right or acceptable but not really care enough to report things. Hence my view that unless people are really offended themselves then the reporting will have to come from the few (like the ones in here) that really are uoset by it all.

"I" appears to be a frequently used word in your recent posts.
Perhaps a little less thinking of "I" and a little more of the thousands of other fans in the ground - might be helpful to them and you.
As for whether you think of something as a "hate crime" - thats irrelevant, because its UK Law.
You may wish to contact the Club to feedback your feelings - or contact the Fans Forum?

Everyone has the right to report unacceptable behaviour and MFC have a policy which outlines what behaviours are acceptable at the Riverside:

Of course I use the word "I" - I'm offering my opinions on a topic raised by another person on a discussion board. I can only offer my opinions, can't I? I can't say what others think. Your picking up on my use if the word "I" is petty at best.

Regardless, I don't need to take it up with anyone anywhere. As I (sorry!) have said I'm not bothered enough to raise it with anyone and I confidently predict the majority aren't. I reckon the majority are decent enough to not use or repeat but very few will be bothered enough to report it.

I wouldn't use it, sing it nor let my children. But I don't care enough to report it. Or think anyone it was reported to would either.

If you want to get upset that people don't care about it as much as you do that's up to you. But we all have stronger feelings towards different things don't we?

RiversideBySide is Boro’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, both within the club and out in the Teesside community.

Working closely with independent charitable arm MFC Foundation, the RiverSideBySide campaign was first established in 2017 with the intention of making the club a more welcoming place for supporters, staff, and any other stakeholders.
It’s already made a big impression in that time, with several significant steps made on the way to becoming among first EFL clubs to be awarded the Premier League’s Intermediate Equality Standard.

Statement Of Commitment

1677083144552.png
Middlesbrough Football Club is committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect; by recognising inequalities exist; by taking steps to address them; and by providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.
Middlesbrough Football Club’s commitment is to eliminate discrimination on the basis of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy & maternity, race, religion & belief or sexual orientation.
We will ensure that we treat people fairly and with respect and that we will provide access and opportunities for all members of the community to take part in and enjoy our activities.
The content of this statement applies equally to the treatment of our staff, customers, supporters, clients, partners and suppliers and is fully supported by the Executive Management Committee of MFC.

Reading through this forum - it appears many have expressed their concenrs at all kinds of inappropriate behaviours - including those chants and comments already mentioned. Its not just my "opinion". If you dont think its worth doing anything about - thats your decision. But if anyone wants to abuse a fellow Boro fan standing next to me or anywhere else,..... because they are gay, black, disabled, etc - I aint standing by and, hopefully, neither will others. Its not reasonable to ignore the law because we cant be bothered. My post applies to anybody if the cap fits. As far as the Club is concerned, certain behaviours are unacceptable.

Thanks for being honest SYLT. (y)

Hey I'll always be honest. I'd be more than happy for itvl all to be removed from the crowd, I suspect 99.9% of decent people would.

Hope you and others are heard when things are reported.

I prefer for all Boro fans to concentrate on positive chants i.e ones that back our team and our players.
