Homophobic chanting in the South Stand yesterday

Sorry to throw in a negative, off-field matter from yesterday especially during a great period for the club.
But still singing "you're just a town full of rent boys" at die-hard opposition supporters who happen to follow a team from London is pathetic in the extreme.
I didn’t hear they yesterday. Very disappointing that it happened. Would be nice for the ‘boro ultras’ to take a stand to all this nonsense.

This is now the world we live in, and it will get worse.
We as a forum and a fanbase need to stand up to the hatred that is being spouted from a minority of the crowd, there is a boro fans forum that spouted that much racism I had to report two of its posters and now it is closed off to the rest of the internet. We as true boro fans can stop the hate.

I have to say that I was sat in the West Stand towards the South and the only chant I heard was "You're just a town full of w@nkers" rather than the usual homophobic slur.

5,000 in the stand, quite hard for 30 lads to control the behaviour of the entire stand.

The group is proudly anti-discrimination of any form as you will have seen via many banners and flags over the years.

Don't use some low lives standing the other side of the stand to bash at RF.

I stand with you 100% on that. ✊

Whilst I abhor the chant we are debating, as one who enjoys the odd one ‘off the wrist’ I don’t like that either.

Whenever you watch vlogs from away fans and they point the camera towards the south stand, the fans on the end of the rows toward the away section basically spend the whole game looking at and trying to get a reaction from the away fans.

Pointless and cringeworthy.

People boo taking the knee in the West Stand.
What are you going to do about them?
We can hear them from the South Stand.
Its not just one area, even though some prefer piety to facts.
Booing taking the knee, whilst bang out of order for most of us, isn't illegal.

I go back to the club hierarchy here.
They could sort both this and homophonic chanting out
Instead they choose to do nothing.

I see the club open that block - nearer the away fans, when there is high demand - so it will presumably walk-ups and casual "fans". Unfortunately, its the only area to extend home attendance with such a huge area netted off for a few hundred away fans. Neither the West, North or East Stands have the room. Perhaps a rethink is required where we can accomodate away fans and keep the casual "walk-up" fans? A question I would ask is: are those buying walk-up tickets for blocks 56 and 54 Boro fans or "Casuals" on tour? Lets not forget - there are organised groups who deliberately orchestrate violence at football matches.
I’m not sure you can just assume is people who are casual that misbehave

I suppose it doesn’t need to illegal to be kicked out, just deemed a breach of terms and conditions

I agree, but it provides an opportunity for trouble makers.
There is no other part of the ground where people can buy entry as individuals or groups of organised agitators - to provoke opposition fans?
Just a thought.
Its unfortunate for decent fans who walk-up who love the atmosphere in the stand.
Its a pity we cant provide a more secure area between away and home fans - something which can be moved and made safe according to demand.
Im not by any means talking about barriers or fences.
Maybe if we think laterally, we can come up with a suitable solution?
The chanting, mind you, comes from different places.
Informed, trained Stewards might find it easier to spot areas of inappropriate behaviour and move as "markers" to avoid provocationn and for "control" to identify?

It's a broad brush, but the rest of the South is almost 100% season ticket holders and they don't behave like that. Only the end blocks that are open to walk-ups cause any trouble.

If you hear/witness discriminatory chanting report it to Kick It Out - they will record and investigate. It will not be overlooked or forgotten about it will be logged as an official incident.
In this case it may also go to the Control Room they will be able to scroll through pictures and find the culprits.
After incidents at a recent away match I asked the club to look at ways of making this process more public. They display this info on the big screen before games.
This is home or away. I was a guest in the Control Room away at Stoke and heard how 5 Stoke fans were identified as having racially abused Zack Steffen. The club safety officer was gathering pictures evidence within minutes of the racism.

I was sat in the East stand as close to their away fans as i could be. I heard the Rent Boy chant but am pretty sure it happened once. Wasn't massively loud (people hearing it in the North Stand I can accept but they must have decent hearing).

I am in no way excusing it and would never sing it myself but think some people need to get a grip.

There are idiots throughout society and they do stuff like this for reactions - to validate that they themselves exist and matter. It's not necessarily a hatred towards homosexuals etc. It is distasteful and offensive, no doubt, but I would now argue that 95%+ of people know this and don't sing it. The remaining 5% or less won't be "educated" on it as they are just trying to get a reaction, it is very rarely through used through ignorance.

Chants like "Sad Mackem b****d" can ring through the Riverside and be sung by the many thousands of all ages in the derbies. Mackems and people born out of wedlock could easily be offended by that (they have no choice over their birth any more than homosexuals) but we don't see people getting their knickers in a twist over it.

I hope my thoughts have come across as they were intended - that whilst the mentioned chants have no place in modern society, worrying about the remaining tiny minority that use it for reactions isn't a major thing to worry about especially given how hard it can be to identify and actually stop them.
