Hackney

Get a transfer to a top six club after 1 good season. Djed Spence.
Get a transfer to one of the other premier league clubs after establishing yourself in a number of seasons in the championship. Tav.

Which one of the two was the sensible decision?
Tav went to a club at the right level for his ability. No big clubs were after him from memory. He’s a very good player but I’d personally be surprised if he ever plays for a big 6 team.

Spence could have easily succeeded at Spurs if he wasn’t so unprofessional. Maybe Forest would have suited him better.

Hackney, for me, has the most potential of the 3. He has multiple top teams who look like they’ll be scrambling to sign him. He also seems to have his head screwed on.

If he moves to a top team and it doesn’t work out, I don’t think it will be for the lack of effort. I think a loan for a year would be great for him, then I can see him starting for a top team.

I work with his uncle Alan.
I know they are in close contact so I have been asking if he is going.
He has always said categorically no.
He wants to stay at Boro.
But I suppose money talks in the football world
Good to hear.

Downings uncle used to drink in the top house in Marske and always claimed he was off (years before he actually did move). 😂

It doesn't matter how good the manager is, he can't replicate playing higher level football. Everything happens that bit quicker in the PL. The players are that little bit better and the only way to improve to that standard is to play at the standard.

Apart from that, he should be busting his gut to get into that senior England team. We talk about it all the time on fmttm about how there is opportunity at CM. There's no obvious choice to partner Rice. Unfortunately he's got no chance while he's playing Championship football. He needs to be playing PL football to put himself in the frame.

I love watching Hackney at the Boro. I really do. Incredible player. But if I'm his dad, agent or friend, I'd be saying take your opportunity when it comes because it might never happen again.
I suspect Carrick wouldn't agree with your first supposition.

He might be good but he can't make all the players in his squad train at a level that a Premier league squad train at and he definitely can't make the teams we play against in the Championship play at the same level as Premier League opposition

You are assuming that is the only way to improve it's through playing.

You might argue that improvement happens on the training field rather than the playing field. I certainly would.

Of course both are required. The coaching is more important than the opposition,in my opinion, of course.

Whatever happens for him , a substantial sell on clause is a necessity.
It's easy to forget he's 21 , uprooting himself away from his family/ loved ones can be quite a scary thought.
I think he'd be much better off doing this having turned 23 , scoring 8 to 10 next year and having been captain of his hometown club... 😉😉

Should be a decent enough fee to begin with, and a hefty sell on clause. So many clubs are after him so we should have serious bargaining power. At times in the past I think we have accepted less than we might have got for players - absolutely no reason to this time.

If we can get a year back on loan that would be a bonus, but if he does go we’ve got to stand firm on our valuation.

Do you all not remember, we're supposed to say he's **** and useless and clubs should just leave us with him...

He's a cracking talent and being English adds to his value for sure, but I'd be amazed if we got over 15mil for him.
You reckon? I'm thinking 20-25m territory. The 50+m numbers are madness though. No ones paying that for a player who has only played Championship football

I dont think we should sell him for less than £40m. Look at how the top clubs are all circling with their mouths open.
I don’t think anyone is going to pay that much for a championship midfielder, although Leeds fans are saying Archie Gray is worth £40m now an he's only played 21 games, plus he’s only 17 ! If we got £20m i think we’d be doing well, and yes i think that’s slightly on the low side when you see what some players go for, but it’s also realistic given his experience and the league he’s playing in.

Yes, PL clubs that come sniffing for him have us over a barrel. Exactly, if he had PL experience then I could see him going for the higher price tags mentioned, but I think too many people are thinking with their heart rather than their head.

Keep him and he's worth double or treble next year post season
Not necessarily, his performance levels could quite easily go down. It's not a given that he'll just continue to get better (I hope he does). There's been plenty before him that have failed to live up to the hype.

Young. Home grown. Versatile. Improving. Not nearing the end of his contract. £15m would be way too low.

Obviously depends what division we’re in. He’s more likely to want to leave if we don’t go up. If we do go up, we won’t need the money as much so we could probably hold out for more.

Minimum £25-30m. Not saying he’s definitely worth that, but with so many big clubs interested we’d be crazy to accept less.

Or £20m + a big sell on clause. Also, assuming he goes to a top 6 club, a couple of your reserves on loan for next season please to sweeten the deal.

Nonsense. If only 1 club was interested, you’d maybe be right. If rumours are true, MU, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs are very interested. Should turn into a bidding war if we do decide to sell.

Yep, I agree, like I said he's a great talent. However, history shows that we rarely get good money for any of our players.

I could see a sell on clause/add ons for sure.
