Hackney

I think you have just made my point perfectly there by saying we can sign 3 or 4 players that won’t be as good
Not really. Buying players as good as Hackney costs £30m. Players not as good as Hackney could be players like Akpom (£10m), Archer (£18m), Ramsey (£12m) or Giles (£5m). Would we be a better team with Hackney or with Akpom, Ramsey and Giles? Or it's 5 or 6 young players with potential.

Hackney on his own is probably not good enough to get us promoted so if we have an offer for £30m+ then maybe we can buy several players that improve the team by more than we lose by having Hackney.

Obviously it is great having Hackney in our team but in the long run we might be better off cashing in while his stock is high. If we keep him and he has a poor season or a bad injury and we don't get promoted his value could drop significantly. We're not the only team that has to make decisions like that. Every team has to make those decisions.

I’d be gutted if we sold him at this point. Yes he’ll likely move on in the next few years but he’s only going to increase in value so nothing to lose by him staying for another couple of years.

I agree and disagree with this .
He's an immense talent, and age is on his , and our ( as a business ) side .
Even if he stayed and got injured , he'd be a year later one of the most talented players in the championship at 23 / 24 ..?
For a solid Prem team , he's worth 30 mill 'punt ' all day long.
And even if he did stay, got injured etc, he'd be worth that at 23/24 years old without a Shadow.
A bit like I said earlier in the thread , I'd ' Declan Rice ' him .. let him see if we can match his ambitions before the inevitable and increase both his personal, and Boros stock.
Of course we need to balance the books, but he's only going to increase in value throughout his career.

Could see him staying and being captain next season. I think a local/acadamy spine to the team will be part of the blueprint that Scott is planning for medium/long term. A local lad being club captain as part of that. I don't see Howson playing another full season after this one.

You'd definitely hope that would be the case but we were saying that about Jones 2 seasons ago and then last season he wasn't even in the team. I don't think that would happen with Hackney but plenty of players with great promise failed to fulfill it

It's like if we come up with the idea.. then we wont be hurt when it happens. We've got so many issues!

I think thats where all the negativity comes from.. bit like saying sega megadrives are fcuking shyt at xmas.. so you don't ball your eyes out when you get a hand me down parker and a pair of hadidas four stripe two sizes too big
I felt that

I reckon the player himself would be happy staying with us for at least another season, possibly as captain.

But if we get a bid of £20m+, he might not have much say in the matter.

Exactly this - Gibson will see it as a way of balancing the books with a little bit (not much in reality) for transfers

It’s good to hear and backs up what everyone has said about him being a great example to other young prospects but as you say, money talks. If he’s playing for us next season in the championship, I’ll be very surprised. The right offer and the right manager could sell a move to him I have no doubt.
It's not just money either. He'll be well aware if he wants to have any chance of breaking into the England Senior squad, realistically he needs to be playing Premier League football

Would not be surprised at all if a gentlemen's agreement was in place, the same as Tav.

Give it a season, if we are not promoted end of the 24/25 season finishes, and a suitable offer comes in - we won't stand in your way.

Personally think he'd be daft to move at this point in time. 18 months developing his game under Carrick can't harm him can it?

I can think of at least 5 good reasons why moving this summer is better than not moving.

1 or maybe 2 at a push why staying at Boro would be better.

(From Hackney's point of view)

I’d love us to build a team around Hackney, but we have to be realistic. He isn’t going to be with us in a couple of years unless we go up this year and really kick on. Home town club or not, he’s destined for bigger things than Boro.

I fully expect him to leave this summer and we should get a really good fee. I personally don’t think he’s quite ready for a Liverpool/MU/Spurs but will be in a year or two. Although it sounds like they’re all circling. Maybe they will sign him up long term and send him out on loan for a year (someone like a Palace/WH/Everton) or possibly us if we go up?

If we have to sell him then a sale with an agreement that he is loaned back to us next season wouldn't be a bad call at all.

Thought gibbo would never do any business with liverpool after their shenanigans with ziege?
