Hackney

I love Hackney but if he goes to either of the likes of Liverpool, Spurs, Man United / City, Chelsea etc, he will be wasting the next few years of his career.
i dont think he would. he would get on the pitch and stand out again imo. he would be getting plenty of game time. at all of them. pep would love him.

I don't think there's much chance he'd get any game time at all if he were to go to City, their midfield seems impenetrable to actually get in to without someone getting an injury. Even someone like Foden has only had a sustained run in the team cause De Bruyne's been out. And he's not gonna be ousting Rodri.

But you never get anywhere by selling your best players - as we know only too well going back to Hodgson, Proctor, Armstrong, Johnston et al and more recently Tav, Spence and Akpom. It just ends up as one step forward and two back. Although i agree there is not much we can do as a champ club when prem clubs come knocking for our best players.
The other side is that you don't necessarily gain by keeping them around either. We only sold Downing after we had been relegated. If we had cashed in a season or two earlier we could have had more money and maybe given ourselves a chance of staying up. Fry was highly rated when he broke through and we've kept him and he's not really achieved much with us.

The best thing is obviously for us to keep our best players and get promoted so we can buy more good players and rise to the level of our best players but the reality is that it is difficult to do and relies on luck/timing of a good squad and manager being together at the same time so it can be a waste to have a top talent player if the rest of the squad is not capable of being promoted alongside them.

In the position we are in where £5m is a big fee to pay for a player we can sell Hackney for £25m and replace him with 3 or 4 players that won't be as good as Hackney but will improve 3 of our starting 11 which would be a net gain. Doesn't always work obviously but that's what we pay our recruitment team to do and that is exactly the model we are working with.

I think you have just made my point perfectly there by saying we can sign 3 or 4 players that won’t be as good

What's he worth £££ ?
I’ve no idea - probably no where near what some fans are mentioning in the real world. Mind you young Archie Gray is being rated at £40m by Leeds fans so who knows. I’m just a tad peeved that when we bring these young players through our academy it’s seen as a given they’ll be sold as soon as they show any good form.

One way or another he'll be at a PL club within the next 2 years.

For his development, another year in the championship would be best, but who would blame him for taking a big money contract if it came along.
Maybe selling and loaning back for a year would work?

It is a little frustrating, but that's our model and the only one that is in anywhere near sustainable and also one that most clubs are now trying to achieve.

I guess that the key is that we do actual bring through enough talent to successfully enable this approach, which in recent years we have, in Hackney, Tav and Spence.

The next layer in this will be developing the ones we've brought in and selling at a profit, such as Rogers, Silvera VDB and Azaz.

He wouldn’t get game time at City.

Kalvin Phillips can’t get on the pitch and he was England’s player of the year not long ago and playing in a major international tournament final.

I work with his uncle Alan.
I know they are in close contact so I have been asking if he is going.
He has always said categorically no.
He wants to stay at Boro.
But I suppose money talks in the football world
It’s good to hear and backs up what everyone has said about him being a great example to other young prospects but as you say, money talks. If he’s playing for us next season in the championship, I’ll be very surprised. The right offer and the right manager could sell a move to him I have no doubt.

Downing signed a contract extension to help out the club.. he was promised the likes of Witsel and Defour would be signing.. challenging for Europe. Then the banks pulled the plug and the deal to sell him to Spurs in the January meant we would have been able to spend the money on players.. we lost out on Ben Watson, Nemanja Matic.. to name just a few!

Downing then broke his leg.. and Villa came in and rescued his career.

Far too many people are too keen to sell Hackney.. we've got half a season left and we want to be aiming for promotion. Hackney would be great to build a team around!

Yes, Hackney is a very talented player.. and if his career keeps going well then premier league teams will be interested. But lets not get carried away.. all these daft rumours about Villa buying him and loaning him back for the cup.. Liverpool buying him and loaning him back.. but he can't play in the final FFS

He's 21.. he's doing very well.. but the jump to the premier league is immense. Maybe a newly promoted team in the summer? even then.. the premier league is big money.. teams want sure fire hits and we are not under any pressure to sell him for buttons. I think he will be best off with us for at least another season regardless of division.

I don’t get it either
It's like if we come up with the idea.. then we wont be hurt when it happens. We've got so many issues!

I think thats where all the negativity comes from.. bit like saying sega megadrives are fcuking shyt at xmas.. so you don't ball your eyes out when you get a hand me down parker and a pair of hadidas four stripe two sizes too big

I do chuckle at the "we can sell Hackney and use the money in 3 or 4 players who aren't as good"

Like yes, I think I'll sell my PS5 and use the money to buy 4 Game Boys. I get the thought behind the statement, just the wording itself reads funny.

At the end of the day, I think we'll never get anywhere if our policy is strictly to just sell our good players after a year or two, replace them with 4 signings of less quality, finish mid-table or just short, rinse and repeat. At a certain point you need to harbour some ambition to achieve something with these players instead of just remain in total stasis. Why even bother with the effort of running a club if you don't want to get anywhere.

I got a pair of a abidas footie boots when I was about 10 for my birthday.

Jesus mum just paint d*ck on my forehead and be done with it.

This is the new model. Young players either through the academy or from elsewhere, develop them, turn a healthy profit.

£30 million. Not a penny less.

I don’t think we’d take the risk of running his contract down and having to take a cut price fee.
