Grealish

Grealish isn't even close to the standard gazza was prior to injuries. Having said that grealish is very disciplined on the pitch gazza was extremely reckless. Off the pitch grealish would be shown the door by pep if he showed at tenth of the irresponsibility gazza did.
Fully agree with this. People have often wondered how Gazza’s career would have done had he gone to Man Utd and in truth I’m not sure he wouldn’t have just ended up at Tottenham anyway. Ferguson wouldn’t have tolerated some of the nonsense.

I don’t see many parallels between Gazza and Grealish really but only minor comment is that nobody really saw how badly it would go for Gazza mentally/health wise back in 1990, even then people thought he was just a lovable rogue and liked a drink. And as said above, the media love to see a sport star on the ****.

I think there is an element of selectivity when it comes to the coverage of Grealish. I was at a reception before the bus parade on Monday. He was well on the way to being drunk, the rest of the team were too. People see the celebrations and the excess but he also had time for everyone in the room and stood and watched a local primary school choir singing city songs and joined in. Then he went on stage to say hello to them all. As you can imagine the kids were over the moon. I think it showed real class and he did it without being prompted, just a natural reaction.

If we build up a character we end up only noticing the things that substantiate our existing view. There are a few things that don’t help him and he has clearly made mistakes. It’s unusual that he is allowed a city centre apartment. That would never have been allowed at Utd with Ferguson and doesn’t help.

Think this session will take it out of him mind.

This will be him turning up for England duty this weekend...

Because it leads to reactions like on here

He’s a great footballer with a heart of gold
He’s done some daft things in the past (show me a young lad that hasn’t )
He’s in good hands at city
sets up the narrative for any loss in form, injury etc

I

I certainly wasn’t intending to paint him as a villain. I think he’s a great guy has a good heart and i know he does a lot for charity. My comment is purely as a fan I want him at his best being successful for England with as few distractions as possible.
He has a life to live besides entertaining us. He might need 'distractions' at the end of the season.

Big Jack took the World Cup trophy with him when he went to meet his mates who had travelled down for the match after the final had finished.

What may affect him is nonsense from the press to satisfy the fan's thirst for anything to do with his life outside of the 90 minutes.

One of the things I noticed on the TV at the FA Cup Final presentation there was a disabled fella high fiving both sets of players at the bottom of the steps from the royal box

Most - if not all - the players high fived him back but Grealish stopped and hugged the fella and chatted back to him for about a minute.

Ok. Well only one of my mates has ever been done for drink driving and the guy has serious alcohol issues, and it was in his mid-30s, we weren’t young. Maybe it’s more common amongst others, dunno, can only go off my own experience of being a young lad.

I am talking about drink driving not partying. That said there were one or two of my mates when young who would have been done had they been caught. But it was when they were 18, not mid-20s and in positions of leadership as Grealish was when he got done.

As I say, this doesn’t define Grealish as a human being, but it does seem to have been quickly forgotten about despite being only during covid, not long ago. The media will be the first to bring it up again if he suffers a loss of form, along with this week’s pictures which currently seem like harmless fun.
I understand what you are getting and it is beyond me why they don’t pay for a chauffeur to ferry them about with the wages they earn but this is not down to footballers only. You only have to read the papers to see how many have been arrested for drink or drug driving.

I don't get though why a young professional sports star can't let his hair down after a successful season without people wanting to drag his past up.

In Britain, we are great at building our professional sports stars up only to knock them down at the first opportunity.

Well this is exactly my point, they WILL knock him down at the first opportunity, so he probably just needs to think about it.

Like a lot of people who only drink occasionally, probably doesn't take many drinks to get smashed (I know that from personal experience) and takes a good few days to recover. I can imagine Grealish is probably a bit of a 'lightweight' on this score, so no surprise to see him 'out of it' after the treble. Don't believe it is any kind of long term issue to get worried about!

I found that the fitter I was the more I could handle. I think the same may have been the case for Robbo, Pally, Foggon, Murdoch etc. We weren't prying into their every move back then though.

As Gazza said when asked which player he most respected, Bryan Robson due to the amount he could consume the night before an England game then captain them and be star man.

Grealish is probably Englands most talented midfielder since Gazza but I think the comparison ends there.

He doesn’t have 5 bellys to lead him astray for a kick off.

Gazaa won sports personality of the year
Grealish, at a young age, has won the Prem, FA cup and Champs league.

You are right - their standards are miles apart

No, Grealish's team has won them, not him.

I'm not into this 'he's won' when it's a club effort.

The lazy journo's who spout it can do one...and those that spout the same.

We have so many brilliant players that 'won' nothing whilst bog standard players won it all.

And I like Grealish, he's a great footballer.

My initial post was not really about the celebration of the achievement and no way about the DD charge. The lad had totally changed as a person in a good way. Probably wrong to mention Gazza as a comparison, just really hope that nothing changes for the lad and keeps growing as a player
