Glastonbury 2023

He absolutely smashed his sub headliner set last year. Throw in a cover, some special guests and a couple of his new album and he's there.

Really cant see it and how do you know how his new album will go down it might be *****
Bit of intel (don’t shoot the messenger and all that)

The new album is going to be massive.
He’s the new commodity.

Been told by the record company to be less Springsteen and more REM. That means les saxophone, means less for one of his band members and probably one of the reasons for his breakdown. He’s a good lad deep down and doesn’t want these kinds of decisions.

The record company are raving about what they have heard so far - just hope all this doesn’t have too much of a detrimental effect on a fragile lad.

It was a great set, one of many yes, but it was undoubtedly absolutely on point in difficult circumstances too
It was one of the really, really bad weather festivals, the place was a mudbath, on top of that the gremlins set in pretty quickly, they were effectively playing without any monitors, they'd been on a world tour for 18 months too and were exhausted, Thom had been going through mental health issues, near mental breakdown with the pressures of touring, and he nearly walked off with the technical problems.

Anyway those who were there have repeatedly said it was amazing and often cite it as the best performance, that's subjective, but what isn't is that they knocked it out the park that night.

Look out for my pride / Che Guevara flag topped with my little Boro playoff flag. I'm in the pit with it for viagra boys and down the front for a bit of war on drugs (who were superb) and other places on Sunday.

While I never wear mine, we counted more Boro shirts than any other (again) this year. It's very satisfying to see especially as I usually winge about our struggles as a fan base with our identity (teesside / Yorkshire / cleveland etc).

It's an amazing festival and I back the opinion you could go and not watch any music at all. They place is colossal.

The Car is a fab album, just not right for a festival headline slot, more smokey Jazz club.
I was just fishing. I'm not a fan but to each their own. After reading more reviews and how polarising their set was in coming round to the idea that they shouldn't be releasing music under the band "Arctic Monkeys" anymore. They've changed so significantly they should have had a rebrand. Then people know what they are going to get. I don't mind seeing him croon the new songs but I don't want to see him butchering the old material. Would be the same if it was the other way round.

Kelly Jones has a new band (Far From Saints), mentioned on here a few pages back. It's a completely different sound to the Stereophonics (country/Americana). Nobody is turning up to see them expecting Stereophonics type music. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples similar. Think that's the way to go.

Lots of bands, in fact most good ones go through changes. Beatles were a skiffle band, if you bought Let It Be or Asbey Road and expected a skiffle band you’d be pretty confused. Same with Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and many others. It’s what good bands

I get that and all of the best bands have evolved considerably over time. I don’t ever remember a band though evolving though to the point where they rework their most popular and beloved hits in concert to the point where it is turning people off

Other than adding pregnant pauses into songs they didn’t rework them.

Just checking the set Brianstorm, don’t sit down,, Teddy Picker, Pretty Visitors (slight arrangement change but worked), as incendiary as ever; most songs were not re-arranged.

Mardy Bum was about 25 seconds longer in a 3 minute track, so about 15% slower, but I seem to remember them doing this song slower the last 3 times I’ve seen them. It’s not a new thing, I think the rhythm guitar is much lower in the mix at Glastonbury which makes it appear even slower, as there is nothing chugging it along, not sure that’s intentionally or just the bbc production. Personally I prefer the recorded version than this version but it’s not terrible.

Just discovered The Lightinging Seeds set on IPlayer,

They should be booked to open every summer festival. A set full of songs that just make everybody feel better and finished with a song that they don’t like being defined by but accept it is what everybody wants to hear.

Defo my Glastonbury highlight

If they played Mardy Bum any slower they would have been headlining next year as well
Ok so Mardy Bum (an album track rather than a hit single by the way) was slowed down. I also remember a different arrangement for 505 (another non-single). The fact is they played the majority of their earlier songs in their original arrangement.

In my experience it is pretty common for established artists to experiment with the arrangement of at least one older track to freshen things up - for themselves and the audience.

There didn't seem to be any drastic re-arrangements during the set. My issue was the lack of cohesiveness between songs and general lack of real front man presence guiding the crowd through the set. He sings differently to the first album and it slightly detracts from some of the 'dirtier' songs but it's not a game changer for me. I mostly enjoyed it but i don't think live music suits the amount of tracks they put in from TBHAC and The Car.
