Gareth Southgate's strong message after some supporters booed when England players take the knee [Gazette]

everyone is allowed an opinion, and I will revert to my earlier comment, do no harm. You don't have to like the players doing it, but that is their choice let them without trying to spoil something that is clearly important to them, what actual harm is their gesture doing to you or anyone else? I'll answer for you NOTHING.

It does no harm to me, hence why I said I wouldn’t boo it.

I just don’t like people making sweeping generalisations that everybody that opposes it is racist, That is pure ignorance too. There is actually a lot of black people that don’t agree with it either, players included.

So there is varying reasons why people don’t support it. If that makes them boo, or not taking a knee in the case of some players, That’s really up to them. It doesn’t make them racist though, although I’m sure some are.

Im sure if they bothered to read up on the BLM and their aims both ideology and politically
they would come to the conclusion tht Mixed raced equality is the the last thing on their
list of things to achieve..
Either way paying customers have the Right to Boo or not

exactly, so what harm did it do those people who did boo? The purpose of the gesture is clear and unambiguous. So to boo it is to boo the purpose, to fight racism. By design or stupidity its racist.

Do you have the right to be racist by buying a ticket to a football match? I don't think so. In fact the ticket is sold with conditions.

They knew that the knee would be taken, it wasn't sprung on them, they knew it was part of the deal. Turn up 1 minute late if it bothers them

There is also a conflation of those people that disagree with it for whatever spurious reason and opt out and those that actively boo it. They aren’t the same thing. I hate the notion of a monarchy and so sat down during the national anthem. I opted out. I didn’t sit there booing it though because I respect the alternative view.

Just think about that for a second. What kind of mind is it that is so upset by 22 players kneeling for racial equality that they demand the right to boo?

Why bring that in to it? Nobody on the thread has accused Britt or any other player/club deciding not to do taking a knee before matches of being racist.
Because it somehow magically makes booing not racist, using Britt not taking a knee in like a trump card.
It’s hardly nuanced there is a clear difference between disagreeing and actively booing.

But I know plenty of black people who oppose it just as much as any other race, And I don’t suppose it’s because they oppose equality, it’s because they don’t like the way it’s being done. Are they racist? They outwardly opposite it, Whether that’s through speech or booing.

Not everybody that dislikes the gesture of taking a knee dislikes it because they don’t believe in racial equality

My point is that people saying people opposing the gesture is racist, But that’s a big generalisation surely.

not taking the knee is also not agreeing with it in most cases, Some players have spoken out about it, so is that racist too?

the school of thought on here is if you opposite it, you are racist. Completely ignoring any other potential factors.

Some absolute pearlers by some trying to justify the booing last night

For "Taking the Knee" see "On Bended Knee" - both predate the BLM movement but share the same meaning which is respect for others and appealing for something.....in this case highlighting a need to change how we see and tackle racial oppression.

"Raised Fist" - can either be a gesture or a salute. Also predates BLM. See Nelson Mandela, John Carlos, Tommie Smith. Also used as an opposite to the Nazi Salute but still mean the same thing......that they are against oppression.

If you boo either....well I don`t need to repeat what you are to me.

Do they boo people taking the knee?
I don’t know if they would boo because I wasn’t in a stadium with them at the time it happened, But they are against the knee and openly criticise it verbally and publicly . What’s the difference?

The fact is taking the knee DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE - because it upsets the racists and their apologists, who said nothing when black players were being called "monkeys" [and the other words] and having coins and bananas chucked at them, along with vile abuse from organised filth.

ITS ONLY WHEN THOSE WHO ARE ABUSED GET UP AND ORGANISE - THAT THE RACISTS AND THEIR APOLOGISTS OBJECT!
Calling Black Lives Matter [BLM] is an overt attempt to silence the fightback by attempting to demonise Black and ethnic minority players [and those of us who support them] from saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

POLITICS permeates everything we do in daily life - SO LETS NOT KID OURSELVES.
Just like the racists who supported South African Apartheid - arguing their Rugby and Cricket Teams should be allowed to tour - because to ban them was political [Because banning the tours gave support to the Black and white fight against racist apartheid].

ITS ONLY BY CALLING THE RACISTS WHERE IT HURTS WILL WE MAKE PROGRESS!
Stand on the sidelines if you want, and call the victims of racism "marxists / commies / lefties / blah di blah di blah" and wave your flags till your wrist hurts.

BLACK AND WHITE STAND UNITED.
DONT GIVE UP THE FIGHT!

Dont kid ourselves it will just disappear:

Everytime their is a "crisis" - unemployment / homelessness / poverty / crime / bankers crash - out comes racism from the gutter.

It's very strange when a group of people sitting together happen by chance to all oppose taking the knee for totally different reasons and decide to boo. What a coincidence.

I don’t know if they would boo because I wasn’t in a stadium with them at the time it happened, But they are against the knee and openly criticise it verbally and publicly . What’s the difference?
You said the black people you know who oppose it boo.

I view booing the players taking a knee as racist (though perhaps not always intentionally) and defending the booing as either ignorant, racist or apologising for racism.

Take your pick.

I don’t think defending people who have the right to voice an opinion or boo something for varying reasons, not just pure racism is ignorant, racist or apologising racism.

At the end of the day it’s also openly criticised by a lot of black people who don’t like it, I could happily introduce you to some in my family and friends circle, Are they ignorant, racist or apologising for racism too?

Whatever you think of the gesture, at this moment it has clear links to a very shady organisation, Whether people want to dismiss that it has links to that it’s up to them, but it does in this current climate.

When you have a movement that has been spearheaded by an organisation with big questionmarks over them, then it’s going to cause polarising reactions from a lot of people, not just white people. I don’t know the demographics in which some people on here live in, but it not just a lot of white football bigots who publicly oppose it, Although I appreciate that’s maybe how it looks in some football stadiums.
