International football tells you very little. Easy qualifications and then a knock-out where anyone can win on the day.
So easy that Italy who are the current European Champions have failed to qualify for the last two world cups and Portugal needed a play-off to qualify.

absolutely agree, international football management is far from easy. You can only win a cup competition once every 2 years, but there are 20 games where everyone is a banana skin against half decent players.

Which is why southgate deserves massive plaudits.

I think he will go down as the greatest manager of all time once he ends his career, the sheer amount of trophies he's won in a relatively short time is in incredible. Then onto the brand of football which has totally revolutionised the way he game is played now all came from him. The job he done at Barcelona was his greatest transformation imo, with some huge calls to make getting rid of Ronaldinho and Eto etc. He never really gets the credit for it as most fans just remember the end product & think he was gifting a great side which is so untrue.

Totally agree regarding Barcelona.

He took over after a very poor campaign by Rijkaard. They won nothing in 07/08 and finished 3rd in La Liga.

Pep came in. Got rid of a fair few big names - Deco/Ronaldinho/Zambrotta (big big calls) and then promoted Busquets and signed Alves & Pique. And the rest is pretty much history. Treble winners in his first season and a dynasty was then made.

That Barcelona team between 2009-2012 was the greatest footballing side ever and I don't think they'll ever be toppled. They just steam rolled pretty much everyone whilst playing the most exciting and attacking brand of football ever seen.

worst league performance is 3rd
10 league wins, in 13 seasons.
2 european cups
3 world club cups
9 domestic cups

that's nearly 2 trophies a year for 13 years.

It would be interesting to see how he’d do at Hartlepool.

And that isn’t to belittle his achievements or question his ability. I think it’d be genuinely interesting to see how he got on / built and improved them etc.

Also the first team to ever win the Sextuple, with Bayern the only other team to do so (2020).

His success unique I think, but even more significant is his influence on football in the wider sense.

His philosophy of possession based football, starving the opposition of the ball, has arguably been the biggest change on playing style the game has seen in the modern era.

I can't think of another manager whose style has had such an influence on football in general.

His thinking has become part of football. FA coaching courses use his thinking. You can see Guardiolas influence at grass root clubs, playing through thirds, playing with triangles, introducing players into half spaces, numerical superiority, Rondoes as training methodology .. I cant think of another Manager/coach who has had that impact.

He changed football.

George Hardwick invented Total Football.

Pep has underachieved at City.

He inherited an already successful side and has literally had the backing of an oil state........and he still cannot win the Champion's League which is what he was brought in to win.

He should have won at least one by now, probably two considering his resources.

He's a good manager but not great.

6 seasons at City

4 Premier League titles
1 FA Cup
4 League Cup

(not including any individual honours).

(not including the number of Premier League records he's broken during those 6 seasons)

9 titles in 6 seasons (not including Community Shield wins)...and you think he's under achieved?

Next joke please.

Lots of other great teams are also trying to win those trophies too.

Yet he still hasn't been crowned Fifa Best Men's Coach.

Klopp has won half the trophies Pep has won but has been named Best Fifa Men's Coach twice while at Liverpool because the people who decide the winner look at the bigger picture, not just trophies.

In the 2018/2019 season Pep won the domestic treble but Klopp still won the Best Fifa Men's Coach.

Pep certainly hasn't under achieved at city, he is doing what is expected (winning trophies), nothing more nothing less.

You have to be kidding?

He's the best of the best, but even that doesn't mean it's realistic to win everything, all of the time.

The MOTD stat said it all, in 14 seasons as a manager he's won the league 11, 2nd twice and 3rd once? (IIRC)

Really?

Hes dominated football domestically and turned them into a European club, yes he hasn't won it yet, but I think most people would agree it's only a matter of time. Everyone knows you need a bit of luck in these cup competitions & so far he's been on the wrong side of it.

Man UTD have spent billions and have what to show for it? You still need to get the best out of those players that cost a fortune, look at how many people try and simply can't manage those big egos.

By his own standards, he's not succeeded in his last two jobs. He's taken Bayern from European champions to not champions and has done no better than par with the resources available to him at City.

Doesn't say much for the other managers out there then.
