First time you had a Donner Kebab?

A place in the centre of Birmingham in the 80s…been an addict or aficionado ever since, best I’ve had in Stuttgart, worst wierdly those GDK abominations!
The German (Turkish) Döner Kebaps are outstanding. Completely different to what I’d call a donner kebab. Proper meat though and not that brown nondescript ‘lamb’.
The traditional kebab as we know it originated in Berlin by Turkish immigrants. I have one a fortnight for lunch on a Friday. Spicy (scharf) powder sprinkled on it. Delicious. And that’s without a beer.

It was in a cafe in Piraeus at about 6 a.m. when I was 22, I hadn’t eaten for nearly a day due to travelling. When i saw it, it looked terrible, was quite greasy and I blummin loved it.

Yeah I used to think the standard British kebabs were decent but can't eat them now. They're just connective tissue all mushed together. The ones I've had in Germany and turkey have been great.

1992.....Bulgaria. Was there for my 18th birthday....Sunny Beach. Bloke had a little stall near a parade of shops....fresh spag bol and kebabs was all he sols.Kebab meat in a quarter of a stottie with fresh iceberg lettuce. Absolute thing of beauty and never had one that tasted as good since.

Didn't like donner meat from the local shops so i always go for a shish kebab but the German doner kebab shops are excellent.

Mid 80’s in Chania, Crete. We were anchored in Souda Bay on the Ark Royal.
Had a day out in Chania, got absolutely rat arsed, ate two kebabs all for about a fiver.

Around 1974 or 1975, a mate and I hitchhiked to London for a few nights and first came across these in takeaways around Soho. They were truly delightful—nothing like what they’ve become today. The meat was carved paper-thin, and while you didn’t get loads, it was juicy, full of flavor, and absolutely worth it.
Doom-On-Horseback's description of the German doner above sounds similar. I haven't been to the one on Linthorpe Rd yet but maybe it's worth a. try.

Always used to get one from a place sort of opposite the forbes building in the 80s then other places opened.
I still have one a few times a year but tend to get a mixed kebab with chicken, chicken tikka and shish all involved with the donner.

I turned veggie in my teens, so never got to try one. I do like the salad and garlic sauce mind.

I still remember my first Doner Kebab, I first ate one before I ever had a parmo.

Romeo's, Guisborough....circa 1997

Early 80s from a small shop on Linthorpe Road that had just opened.
I think it might have been the first one in Middlesbrough. Could have been the one 'sort of opposite Forbes' that wyliefan mentioned.
He gave us a small sample each to try first.
(The kebab shop owner, not wyliefan)

It was anazing. They are just not the same now. Although I find that Scottish ones are definitely inferior to English ones anyway. Particularly the sauce.

It was up about 3 short steps.
And the chilli sauce was red hot and quite watery hence them putting white cabbage in the bottom of the pitta.

That place on Corporation Road opposite the Empire, about 1988. It had really runny chilli sauce that soaked right though the kebab meat, was a regular visitor 😁
