First Test - India v England

my crickety expert friend says they are trying to balance leaving it as late as possible for the pitch to detioriate, with time & runs. seems mad to me, just wasting time.

Surely having less time only hurts us?

I imagine India will play for the draw now, so they'd be happy this is happening.

If he's just trying to ensure India can't win, more runs would help more than whatever this **** is.

10 overs tonight, another 10 with a newish ball tomorrow morning, second new ball after tea.

I can only think they only want Jimmy and Jofra to bowl a maximum of 5 each tonight from one end. 10 from the spinners would mean declaration in next 20 minutes or si

Very hard to play for a draw on a pitch like this as you don't build up any momentum and the pressure just ramps up. India will go for it I think.

Bizzare at best. I mean we had batsmen reviewing with 400 on the board.

Also I didn't really see the reason to bring in Archer and Anderson at the death to bat. What happens if one got hit on the head or elbow? You lose a bowler for the sake of 5-10 extra runs.

I guess time will tell. If we miss out with them 9 down for 280 odd due to time it's a woeful decision.

The people saying taking overs out of the game reduces the chance of England winning are the same people saying this strategy is a cautious one. If anything it’s a brave and bold call, whereas the easy/cautious/obvious way to go was throw the bat, declare 400 ahead and give yourselves an extra 20-30 overs to get them out.

Root has put his neck on the line here, but in his mind he gets 3 goes with the new ball instead of 2, on a pitch where the new ball has done all the damage. His bowlers will also be fresher after a good nights sleep. If we run out of overs with India 200 odd for 8/9, criticise away. If they get through to close without losing a wicket, but then we take 3 or 4 in the first session tomorrow, for me that will vindicate the strategy call regardless of what transpires thereafter.

As a top class test team you shouldn’t need longer than a day to get a team all out in the 4th innings
True. Although India have 2-3 batsman who could comfortably bat all day.

Also still question marks over the spinners. They are absolute key on day 5.

'Here's a stat for the Leach skeptics. He's struggled in first innings in his career, in 12 first innings he's bowled in, he's got 14 wickets at an average of 57, but he's been superb in second innings. That was his 33rd wicket in 11 innings, he's averaging 20.09 in second innings of Test matches.

Forty England bowlers have taken 30 or more wickets in second innings in the last sixty years, and he's averaging the best of all of them.'

The big wicket for me is pujara, he could bat all day, get him in the first hour tomorrow and I think we will win
