FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

Good one πŸ‘

Im behind the goal when we beat Rotherham 4-1 Oxto er 1986 & the next time front page of the gazette after drawing with Brighton to go up

Our 3 minutes of fame πŸ‘
Sadly I am not going to act as your casting agent here Erimus, as neither of those games have goalscorers that played in the 1990s - Sorry your moments of fame will have to remain in the gazette;).

However I will be looking for 10% of any future earnings from alandoodysdog - didn't think they did replica shirts in pet sizes back then

As promised, here is the list of Bernie Slaven's goals that I have researched. It may not be 100% correct. However it is pretty close.....

For use later in the quiz. Trying picking a top 3 out of this lot.

Might want to recheck the list of those Merson goals. Just looking at first one Beck and Ravanelli scored the in Stockport away LC semi.
Just looking myself. I think it is this goal in the 1-1 draw that he is talking about...
At just after 6 minutes in this video....

Here is the Merson crib sheet I have produced for myself. Just starting to work through it....

02 September 1997 A Stockport County 1-1
25 October 1997 H Port Vale 2-1
28 October 1997 H Huddersfield Town 3-0
08 November 1997 H Queens Park Rangers 3-0
15 November 1997 A Norwich City 3-1
22 November 1997 A Swindon Town 2-1
02 December 1997 A Ipswich Town 1-1
4 February 1998 H Tranmere Rovers 3-0
24 April 1998 Port Vale 1-0

League Cup

23 September 1997 A Barnet 2-0
27 January 1998 A Liverpool 1-2
18 Feb 1998 H Liverpool 2-0

FA Cup

24 January 1998 H Arsenal 1-2

Oh here are my three

1. The breakaway goal at Anfield latching on to a through ball to lash it in to the near post

2. Goal at Stockport in the 1-1. Beck clever overhead assist and Merson runs on to drill it home

3. Goal at home to Tranmere. Solo goal rounding several defenders before thrashing the ball high into the net.

Reviewing all those goal brough back so many memories. Forgot how influential both Emerson and Beck were also in that season. Anyway some beauties in there

1. Agree with the two above. The goal at Anfield in January 1998 in the League Cup Semi Final first leg to pull it back to 1-1 and effectively set up that fabulous night two weeks later at the Riverside.

2. That first ever goal he scored for us at Stockport. The trickery of Beck to set him up and the cool finish.

3. In terms of favourite the goal he scored against his old club Arsenal in the FA Cup in 1998. It was his day that day parading his three kids as mascots on the pitch before the game. Cooly rounding the out charging keeper before slotting home from an angle.

Liked his first against Tranmere at home was also great.

Merson...another I didn't realise how good he was until I saw him play for us. A shame how it all ended, but I think that was more down to his personal troubles than anything else. I'll go for

1 The goal against Liverpool at Anfield in the first leg of the League Cup Semi. Great finish and the platform for the magic second leg.
2 Port Vale away in the promotion run in, vital goal we scored early through Merse and then held on.
3 Norwich away in November 97, going on goals I remember from the time. Great away performance, another great finish from a Boro counter attack iirc

Could have gone for the Liverpool home semi final, despite it being a penalty and the Arsenal cup game goal. He was an important player and his form in 98 deservedly got him in the World Cup squad. As posted early a shame he didn't stay longer.

A number of good ones to choose from...

1. 27 January 1998 A Liverpool 1-2
2. 24 January 1998 H Arsenal 1-2
3. 22 November 1997 A Swindon 2-1

I thought we went 1-0 up at Anfield and they equalized straight away, Redknapp screamer (or lucky shot depending on your viewpoint). It could be the passage of time is dulling my memory though.

Apologies your memory is better than mine. Mersonβ€˜s goal did put us ahead.

Changed my mind so many times

1. 27 Jan 98 V Liverpool 1-2
2. 24 Jan 98 V Arsenal 1-2
3. 22 Nov 97 V Swindon 2-1

The Oxford goal was nearly 3rd

I am guessing that Erimus74 is probably out cycling (or something like that). So we will hold off posting the answers until he turns up.

In the meantime here is the set up of the next round from junos_boots:

Hamilton Cuesta Ricard 133 games 44 goals (115 games 33 goals in league)

Signed for Β£2 million pounds from Deportivo Cali in 1998. It did seem as though we were trying to collect centre forwards at this time as we also signed Marco Branca and Alun Armstrong in a busy couple of months.

I first saw Ricard live at West Brom in a 2-1 defeat and I was left speechless (I missed Chelsea cup final as couldn’t get ticket). The West Brom fans were in hysterics near us as he took air shots, mis-controlled simple passes to him and generally looked out of his depth in my book.

However during his time at The Boro he would have other games where he looked like this, BUT he also had games where he looked world class. Watching the world cup in France, England were cruising against Colombia at half time. Hamilton came on at half time and whilst he didn’t engineer a come back he certainly made Englands three centre backs realise they were in a game.

He has been involved in lots of controversial incidents since leaving The Boro, including prison sentences and FIFA bans.

He is still the top premier league goalscorer for the Boro, despite the other stars that have graced the shirt (Rudy Gestede only needs another 30 to catch him though).

The good people at Middlesbrough FC are obviously getting involved in this journey down memory lane as they have provided this succinct montage of all of his goals

Erimus74 got a puncture on the way to work. Then had to walk home. So he is running late.

It is good that junos_boots and myself decided to decouple the start of the next round from the finish of the previous one.

So the results will be published in due course.

I am off to watch the last episode of a tv series. While the missus does some work. Then watching some Boro videos probably.
