To be fair, junos_boots and I did have a discussion about whether to do this or not.
I just love the remanscing, I know we all can't & are busy at times, but this is right down my street
Nice cycle ride, now chilling in the garden, having a beer, snack & Boro binge 💕

PS & wearing this, last seasons away top, 🌞

Just been in discussion with junos_boots. We are going to publish the crib sheet of the matches the player scored in every day. At the same time we reveal his name of the player for the next round of the quiz.

I am going for:

1. The promotion goal at Wolves - 2 May 92
2. The knee control and volley against Newcastle - 27 August 1991
3. The second diving header against Bristol Rovers 25 April 1992 (after getting away with a handball one earlier).

I actually was nearly going to include the handball one as my third choice, still might, as I felt it more exciting than the winner, given the only three people in the ground who never saw it as handball were the officials :D. I am currently trying to decide which one i like most, Wilko’s or Jimmy Floyd’s

Jimmy did it in the last couple of minutes v Newcastle - no contest surely

I only included that goal in 3rd place so I had an excuse to mention the handball.

Just a reminder I will put the my thoughts up at 12pm UK time, along with a few thoughts on why I picked the goals as well as the music video. I will then put the second player up with a list of the games he actually scored in, so as to help the reminiscing process.

To enter the first round just put the goals you liked / remember from Wilkinson, it is really about the debate, rather than my answers.

I remember being underwhelmed when we signed Wilkinson as I really liked Iain Baird who I think he replaced. As is often the case I was proved wrong....

(1) Newcastle away Boxing Day 1991....remember listening to this on the commentary with my now departed old fella and jumping round the living room....and Wilkinson must score I believe was the title of a club cassette of that season my dad used to have!
(2) Man City FA Cup 1992....when the cup still meant a lot, we came from behind to knock out City, of Peter Reid and Steve McMahon, in the last 10 minutes.
(3) Wolves away when we got promoted to the premier league in 92.

I will post the musical clip for him. These are really so that the goal clips start at the appropriate point. There will be more on these music clips later in the quiz though so take note :)

East 17

My favourite was a magical boxing day at Sid James Park, with a huge Boro contingent. I will always remember the half time scoreboard with Ossie wishing all the Geordies ‘seasons greetings’ (pity he didn’t last the whole season). Then early in the second half, everything happening in slow motion, Geordies caught on the break appealing for offside (look how far inside his own half Wilko was) as he sent us into raptures with his finish – can you remember how good it was bouncing around terracing like that.

1st V Newcastle Dec 91

Next up, close run thing but I still laugh out loud, watching the boxing day goal. This game has been gone over a few times in the previous incarnations of this competition series. It was a crap header, but God what a feeling. WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE.

2nd v Wolves May 1992

https://youtu.be/25kX9-_a9f8?t=118

Next on my list is this bullet, diving header v Sunderland to wrap up a 4-1 win. Couldn’t resist reliving the penalty skied by Don Goodman on this as well. The commentator says ‘another classic Wilkinson goal’.

3rd V sunderland oct 93

Just missing out was his first Ayresome goal, control – turn – volleyed finish

Wilkinson v Newcastle Aug 1991 https://youtu.be/MfLvtCwglmo?t=179

Another few of his diving(?) headers (for Coluka as promised)

Next up is Paul Merson. I have included a list of games he scored in to assist peoples memories.

He arrived to replace Juninho and despite the crap he comes out with now, his season for us was brilliant.

I was living in the South West this year and I got to most of the away games, where Merson seemed to reserve his best performances. The tactic seemed to be to use his pace to run beyond Beck into the spaces left behind the defence. It reminded me of how Foggon used to get his goals in my very early days. My attendance at Riverside was very limited in the first half of the season, but like a good glory hunter I made more of the 650 mile round trips for the later stages of the season. I can now after many therapy seasons, and the passing of 22 years, forgive him his penalty at Bramall Lane.

Back from golf. Today we only played 9 holes as it was windy. It was just a knock around with my wife and two friends (one English the other from the Netherlands). I did manage to beat a Spanish player on Sunday in match play though

I will get on to processing the results now.

Just a tip off, Bernie is on the list of players and he scored a lot of goals. To help people I will be preparing a list of all of his goals. This will be published well in advance of the day when his name is given out by junos_boots.

Thanks to junos_boots for publishing his answers and setting up the next round.

Here is the league table after round 1:
Round1Resultsjunos_bootsFavourite90s-ishGoals.jpg
As junos_boots has said, the name for the next round is Paul Merson. With a much shorter goals list to select from.

As usual, answers by 12:00 noon tomorrow (27 May 2020) please.
