FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

I went to the Newcastle game mentioned without a ticket, so paid in the side terrace & when Wilko got the ball & charged half the length of the pitch with the ball I just clung on to the barrier & if he scores don't jump, lads around mecwere saying hes *#%%# & won't score, when the ball hit the net I was bouncing inside but so motionless or I woukd have been filled in
Like me in the Spurs ground for the match where Bosco scored.

Here we go

1. Paul Wilkinson sole effort against Newcastle at St James Park Boxing Day 1991 latching on to a clearance and in to a headwind ran half the length of the pitch calmly lifting the ball over Mags keeper Tommy Wright into the net

2. His first goal that same season in a 3-0 win against Newcastle at Ayresome Park. Taking a nod on to his thigh he swivels in one movement and smashes the ball into the Holgate net.

3. His winner against Man City FA Cup 3rd Round 1992 in a 2-1 win. Latching on to through ball off Any Payton's head he smashed a half volley into the top corner - just a minute after Kerny had equalised.
Some going to beat those 3 TBH, excellent start, the reigning champion is on form 👍

I have a mate who is a Geordie and he came with me into the Holgate when they beat us 3-1 in the league cup. Imagine my dilema, just before full time as all I wanted to shout was 'he's a Geordie' and then watch him get pumelled. The only thing that stopped me wasn't friendship but he was the one driving us back to Canterbury, where we were at university.

😁

Can you imagine what that 300 mile journey was like. It was bad enough travelling around either on my own or with other Boro fans after a defeat. I remember as we went past The Ram Jam pub/services on the A1 I was just about ready to kill him and sod what happened to me.
Yep I could imagine, I was on days the following day at North Tees, Seal Sands, mostly Hartlepool people, all the Hartlepool fans & Geordie made their presence felt for a good 8 hours, I was on 12 hour days back then, I was distraught but bit my tongue for the whole shift, at the end of the shift an oldish bloke said to me in the locker room, my you kept your cool son, don't know how I did though

been at an age where I have afforded and contrived the luxury of been lazy I would have prefered a pick list of say 10 of Wilkos goals to peruse and pick top 3....... not sure i have the patience to wade through all of wilkos 60 odd goals in a day or so on you tube but then it does put the work on the quizmaster rather than the contestant so this is a tad unfair and typifies my laziness.....

Well here we go for another, enjoyable nostalgia quiz, IMHO, a great Boro servant & a good one to start with

Zoo has set the benchmark with 3 cracking goal choices which would entice any list

My 3 are as follows

1st - 15th August 1992 Paul Wilkinson playing in his 47th Boro league game, scored a historic goal & his 16th Boro league goal which was our 1st ever PL goal

2nd - 2nd May 1992 This was to be Paul Wilkinsons 15th goal of the season & one of the most important goals of his career, certainly his Boro career, when he headed a ball goal wards which sort of went in slow motion, hitting the post & going in to put the Boro in front away to Wolves which clinched our place in the 1st ever PL

3rd - 4th February 1992 an FAC giant killing Cup tie away to Sheff Weds, Boro were losing 1-0 away at 1st Division Hillsborough, John Hendrie equalised then Paul Wilkinson put the mighty Boro infront & through to the next round

I was at all 3 games, I could have included the Newcastle goals, he was a cracking CF

Hi all again,

Lets see if I can do better this time then, can't do any worse!!

I'll go:

1st. Goal v Wolves
2nd. V Newcastle Boxing Day 91
3rd. The infamous hand ball goal, was it v Newcastle? Can't remember, but everybody in the ground apart from the ref knew he had hand balled it into the net.

The good news (or bad from a Boro point of view) is that not many rounds have as many goals to choose from.

If we are talking about significant goals then the Wolves one would be number one but I hope I interpret this as the best goals in terms of quality? Also taking Alamoodysdogs point I think I’ll treat this as a reflection personally on goals I remember rather than researching all 60 odd goals he scored for us. So apologies Paul if I missed some crackers but

1. That swivel goal against Newcastle so eloquently described by Zoo in the 3-0 home win 1991-92. (he scored a similar one against Portsmouth in the FA Cup 4-2 loss but without the thigh control)

2. First goal in the FA Cup v Sheff Wednesday at Hillsborough as he ran on to a through ball and lobbed the keeper.

3. The breakaway goal in 1-0 win at St James Park Boxing Day 1991.

No that is exactly what this is about. Favourite goals and the discussion that goes along with them. I picked my three favourites and even after looking through quite a few others they remained unchanged. It is definitely favourite, rather than best though and situation can come into it so that people don't have to trawl through all 60 odd goals.

I loved Paul Wilkinson. His aerial ability was superb. (See my last paragraph, help needed)

1. Leeds Aug 92 Wilkinsons 2nd goal of the game, Diving header, from a great cross from the left, after previously stabbing home a minute or two earlier to put us in front.
2. Sheff Weds FA Cup Feb 92. Turned Pearson beautifully to chip the keeper with aplomb
3. Wolves March 94. He took the ball down on his chest, held it up, laid it off to Andy Peake, he squared to tommy wright who put an exquisite ball over the top for Wilko to beat the offside trap, chest it down and lob the keeper for an 87th minute winner

Honourable mentions for the Norwich game in May 93, we were already down. His excellent diving header in the 3-3 draw.
Also, the boxing day goal at Sid James Park v Newcastle where he seemed to take ages to get to the penalty area when put clean through on half way.

I also remember him scoring a fantastic diving header in the holgate end goal but can’t for the life of me remember the opposition and cant find it on you tube. (I hope I haven’t dreamed this up o_O) In my head it was going to be my first choice too, but i am doubting my sanity now.
HELP!!!!!

I have some possibilities but will leave them until tomorrow if that is ok (the suspense)

As usual the key word is favourite.

To be fair, junos_boots and I did have a discussion about whether to do this or not.
