FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

As I posted earlier alan, do you think he was a cult legend?

Isn't he still our top Pl goalscorer in a season? Not too sure if Viduka, or JFH beat his goals record
debatable whether I would call him a cult hero .... its a funny one ,,, Ian Baird is a cult hero if only for the newcastle donkey game ... it only takes a moment to endear a player forever in cult status - massimo in the UEFA games for example... Uwe 100% cult hero ... we needed something and he provided it ... sheer effort and a few goals as well... Bonded with the fans from the very start...not the most skillful Hammy was just entertaining (now and again) so I would say he wasnt a cult hero. I look upon his time here with affection and left in the right way

Good post 👍

I think his importance to us in our return to the top division in 1998-9 has been under estimated certainly. Oh for a striker of his capability these days. They would be worth 5 x the amount then. Imagine if we had a striker capable of those goals when we returned to the top flight in 2016? Of course it takes a team to set him up and he had the likes of Beck to work with. But quite a few of those goals were individual efforts, chasing lost causes or following in.

One things for sure cult or no cult he’s deserved of a striker in the best ever top ten played for us. In fact I’d put him in the top 5 post war

1. John Hickton
2. Brian Clough
3. Bernie Slaven
4. David Mills
5. Hamilton Ricard
6 Alan Peacock

Wow some great goals to choose from. My favourite was his solo effort against Arsenal in 2000 but his best was the spectacular piledriver against Coventry.

1 Piledriver v Coventry City. Unstoppable shot from well outside the area.

2. His goal v Sunderland. The powerful shot into the top corner (as it was against Sunderland)

3. Bradord City FA Cup. I was behind the goal that evening and it was a terrible game. However that goal shone like a beacon and came from nowhere. I traced the ball from the moment it left his right boot and it started a good yard outside the goal and curled viciously and deliciously in.

Bit of an enigma old Hamilton, some great goals in there, but I'll go with the ones that sprung to mind when I first saw his name

1. FA Cup 3rd Round curler at Bradford City
2 Goal against Sunderland at home in November 1999
3 Spurs away in 1998 (one two with Beck) - Hamilton used to like playing against Spurs

Here are my 3 choices:

1. Spurs 13/9/98 one-two run in and score
2. Wimbledon 10/8/99 similar to above in some ways. The one with Gascoigne
3. Coventry 19/2/2000 pile driver.

Wow, when you look back and remember just how good the majority of those goals were, even the well placed pens, you realise how underrated he no doubt was. We were spoilt to some degree. Consistency was probably the issue, from both the player and those that created for him.
1. 13/09/98 v Spurs (his 1st in game) What a great team goal. He still had lots to do to score. Awesome goal.
2. 08/01/01 V Bradford City, FA Cup super super goal midway through the 2nd half. He received the ball on the edge of the area on the left, looks up and pulled the trigger with a superbly meant curler into the top corner. He knew exactly what he was doing and executed it perfectly
3. 05/04/99 v Wimbledon (his 1st in game in the 1st minute) long clearance nodded on defender just nods it away and somehow Hammy from 21 yards audaciously hooks it back over himself their defence and the keeper. I still don’t know whether it was luck, skill, whether he meant it or not, but it had a bit of pace on it too. Simply superb to watch. (different to Spanishmans choice in the same game)

Honourable mentions to the Sunderland goal, Arsenal team goal in black strip and Viera mistake in the red strip along with coventry smash....... I could go on most were special in their own way tbf.

That one came close to being 3rd for me as well.

Next player up - answers by noon UK time tomorrow (29th)

Oswaldo Giroldo Junior – JUNINHO I haven’t put his stats as my book finished a year before he did and different websites have different games played. He did score 34 goals though.

Juninho, the best player I have seen in a Boro shirt. The excitement at the time of his signing was unbelievable. We had made a good start to life in top flight with Fjortoft, Barmby and Hignett linking up superbly, then we became THE story in World football. I remember walking through the wastelands of Middlehaven on my way to Leeds game and not being able to move for people trying to buy spare tickets – there were more touts than for the U2 concert at Roundhay Park.

As the players came out, I remember him looking a bit like a lost kid in Asda and Fjortoft putting his arm round him and pointing around the crowd and then back at Juninho, telling him all of the fans were for chanting for him.

Anyway, he had 3 spells and each time he signed, I as a grown man, got excited. I also got annoyed when some bloke in Lyon nicked his name, and he won a World Cup winners medal.

Again MFC have helped us out with a montage of all of his goals (see if you can spot the deliberate? mistake by Boro’s video editor).

Spanishman is putting the league table and Ricard results together and will post them soon.

I was a little busy finishing off some euromomo charts. So posting this is a little later than anticipated. Once again junos_boots has confused Erimus74 and myself.

In his words:

Music track Emma Bunton – What took you so long?

spanishman says "I have made this bold so people notice it":

feel that this track has brought forward the time for an explanation of the music videos. They are almost without exception awful, but they are going to play a role in any tie break that is needed. They all have a Boro link and if people want to send a private message to me when they think they have solved the link between the songs I can use it to separate people at the top of the table – it’s only a bit of fun after all and solves the original issue of posting multiple you tube links.

Now the serious stuff, my favourite Ricard goals were as follows

It wasn’t our priority that year but this FA Cup goal was an absolute screamer. Results had picked up in December and I was now starting to believe that we were going to stay up. We were in the middle of a good unbeaten run and it was only our FA Cup exit in the next round that seemed to start a little wobble. A cup run would have been the icing on the cake but Wimbledon knocked us out of both cups. I know this game wasn’t in the 90s but the (my) rules do allow it.

Jan 2001 v Bradford cup https://youtu.be/cqRdTvHXUik?t=75

Second up is another screamer to earn a draw against Sunderland. We had made a pretty solid start to the season and both us and Sunderland were riding high in the Premier League - next we played Arsenal and our season started to implode for a while. This was Hamilton’s first goal for a few months, but it was a beauty.

Nov 1999 v sunderland https://youtu.be/DZnN4z4g648?t=425

My third favourite is more (all) about the situation – last game before Christmas and a win at Old Trafford! This was the goal that got our heads up and us starting to believe. My fingernails have never been right since that game – but we held on and won. Man United won pretty much everything that season, but with this win we were 1 point behind them in fourth place. Sadly we only won 5 games after this, all coming in a purple patch around Easter.

Dec 1998 v man u https://youtu.be/xCupABgnQ1A?t=136

Another that was very close was his screamer against Coventry

Feb 2000 v Coventry https://youtu.be/8rkK8zB_RAA?t=53

And also this goal against Arsenal was a classy finish, but we were 4-0 down at the time – so that rules any sentimentality out

Nov 1999 v Arsenal https://youtu.be/_TmPqkzw37o?t=199

It was just a shame that Wimbledon got relegated (still managed a cup goal against them) and all of our away matches weren’t at White Hart Lane, as he would have had a better strike rate than Cloughie or Camsell!

Now on to the league table. Erimus74 and myself are feeling strong.

Juninho is next on the list. As usual answers in by 12:00 noon tomorrow (29 May 2020) please.

I have a tee off time of 08:30 UK time tomorrow. It looks like it might be windy so we may only play 9 holes.

If we play 9 holes I will be back in time for processing the results at 12:00 noon UK time.

If the weather changes we might play 18 holes. If that happens the publication of the results will probably be a bit later in the day.

So I will ask junos_boots to do as he did today. Launch the next round of the quiz before I publish the results from this one.

For me it's a cult hero if you have to explain why they are a hero to non Boro devotees Dean Glover my favourite. You can also probably have your own cult heros, who you have to explain to other Boro fans, David Currie mine here - my dearly departed old fella and late uncle had loads of these (Don O'Riordan, Pat Heard etc...), usually accompanied with 'He knows the game'!

junos_boots - this tie break thing might be needed to separate Erimus74 and myself for relegation purposes. So I thought it worth asking publicly about the rules.

Is each of us allowed to message you with as many guesses as we like about the music video links?

Also, if we get a guess wrong are we penalised in any way?

As I will probably not have time to do this tomorrow morning I thought I would get my answers in early. What a great time I have had watching these goals.

1. Man Utd 10/4/2000 Cutting in from left. Nutmeg. Fired into the corner.
2. Leeds 15/3/2003 Two touches then a long range shot.
3. Huddersfield 23/10/1996 Nutmeg pass. Then a great finish.

People can have as many guesses as they want - use private message, rather than cluttering up the board. I may not respond to all (but I will keep them) and I won't publish any results until the end of the quiz, so it can be used for any tie break purposes eg who out of two tied people got the correct answer first.

If you have more than one guess I will compare 1st guesses of tied people first, then second guesses etc.

If this sounds stupid, just let me know.

Sounds fine to me. I just thought it worth teasing out the rules in advance. Ta.

Well I'm in good company 👍🚴
