Favourite place in North Yorkshire?

Morning Coluka, my fave is also where I live in Swaledale (Richmond). The route from Richmond to Reeth on either side of the Swale is fantastic on foot or in car. Then all the way up through Gunnerside, Muker, Thwaite and even as far as Keld. It is wonderful. Pop over Buttertubs to Hardraw and Hawes and back down lovely Wensleydale through Leyburn; or pop over top to Tann Hill and then back down to Reeth through Arkengarthdale.

I also love Wharfedale all the way down to Bolton Abbey, it is glorious, but is of course West Riding, as is Ripon.

I like the NY Moors but personally find them bleaker than the Dales. That said the NY Railway is utterly fantastic and Helmsley is a lovely place.
Whitby is iconic for a reason - a gem.

The Coast though; I'd rather head that bit further for us and get up to Northumberland. Bamburgh is just fantastic.
And for us just an hour west of Richmond is Ullswater.
We are so unbelievably lucky with what is just an hour or so from us.

And on a day like this...

Now then Indeedido, oh man that route you describe is pure heaven. I could do with an interlude at some of my favourite country inns for a beer and a bite. The Punch Bowl at Low Row, The Farmers Arms at Muker, The Tan Hill Inn up at Keld. Ah yes over the pass to Hardraw Force is great too and It has the Green Dragon handily placed for refreshments. Sadly i think it’ll be a good while yet before the opportunity arises.

I feel a longing to walk the Gunnerside Gill Circular route past the old lead mines. When you get to Swinner Gill up on the high path, you get some awesome views over Swaledale.

Very much agree about the Northumberland coast too, especially Bamburgh and across to Lindisfarne. (y)

As much as I love N Yorks, I also agree about the Northumberland coast, that is equally as brilliant in my view and normally at this time of year we'd be up there camping near seahouses and around that area, I never tire of it (and as I live up around the area, albeit the city, it's even closer). Doesn't look like I'll be at the lindisfarne festival this year either if things continue as they are, can't see social distancing being gone by the end of the summer, maybe not even this year

I only hope that some of those places survive Coluka.
Punch Bowl is part of same group as CB Inn up Arkengarthdale and should be ok. I hope the Farmers at Muker can survive and the little shop/gallery too.
Never had that pint; should have done; buy you one at Punch Bowl post lockdown.

Locomansimon, I and I am sure quite a few others on here, would love to hear more about your experiences as a driver. What are the best and worst classes of loco you have driven? Do you drive diesels as well as steam?

Surprised there has been no mention of Malham which, although in the old West Riding, is now North Yorkshire. When it's not rammed, it's wonderful.
Here's Ade Edmonson giving it some love

no one place, though a little hike up Captain Cooks then Roseberry Topping & to Suggitts for an ice cream is a nice way to spend some time. I like that I can see the sea, distant hills, massive countryside, towns & industry... just sums up our area for me - of course C4 only ever see one of those.

We’ve been exploring the Wolds recently. Thixendale, Warter, Bishop Wilton and others. Another stunning area just on our doorstep, Pocklington is on the list for places to retire to.
