Nice to see you Harry.Another one for Whitby, just love the place.
Been in South Yorkshire today, I always class it as proper Yorkshire, a much nicer city than scruffy Leeds and a proper football town.
I'm in Huddersfield tomorrow which isn't bad as it seems and some nice countryside nearby
Cheers fella, left the other place after constant abuse on there and the other, other place! Nice to see a few friendly faces about.Nice to see you Harry.
If you're in Huddersfield tomorrow, do the wise thing and drive over the hill to Halifax ... the Piece Hall, Lantern, Wandering Bear, Grayston Unity. A much better place to spend time than Huddersfield (I know, I used to live in Hudds and my folks still do).
Anyway, that's West Yorkshire. My favourite place in North Yorkshire ... probably the world.... is Littondale.
As we are part of the North Riding what's your favourite location?
I realise Ticker_Tape and others will be annoyed as they are in the primarily Sunderland leaning and Land of the Prince Bishops area, however those of us from the right side of the river - any favourite spots?
Fountains Abbey, Helmsley, Whitby, Malham Cove? Any hidden gems?
Your post stirred a great memory in me of camping with a bunch of mates at Lealholm in a farmers field near the river when we were in South Park 6th Form. There was some kind of meteor storm when we were there and we saw loads of shooting stars. Golden days. This thread brings back so many memories and leaves me feeling homesick. I moved away for work in 1982 but still visit family and the Riverside etc. After all that time I still get excited on the journey back and would love to move back to North Yorkshire. Problem is that we have three daughters, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren here in Nottingham so it would be too big a wrench to leave. Plus, I’m still working!
I love all the places mentioned and have visited most, but last summer spent some time in the Esk Valley remembering lots from my early teens - fishing in Danby, Castleton and Lealholm. Great memories of me being allowed to go camping with a few friends for the first time just on the moors above Lealholm and being kept awake every night by the noise of the sheep. NYM railway holds more memories, and Whitby, my wife’s favourite place. One of my sisters holidayed in Staithes every year and it’s still a great place to visit. Still have great memories of the Lyke Wake Walk - including the pain, and the sheer frustration of seeing those ‘golf balls’ at Fylingdales that never seemed to get closer!
My grandad worked for the Tees Conservancy Commission. He died when I was around two years old but my dad told me lots of stories about grandad’s daily walk from Canon Street to somewhere near South Gare along the black path. Still enjoy the train journey to Redcar seeing remnants of that black path. Not one of the most scenic routes but still close to my heart. My mam and dad took us all on the train to Redcar many times and always from Cargo Fleet station. How many remember getting the train there?!
Winkle gathering at Saltburn, Staithes and Runswick Bay, and can still remember my mam having to carry me as she climbed the cliffs when the tide came in so quickly at Robin Hoods Bay.
For me, there is no better place than North Yorkshire.
