Fair play to Wilder for calling out Lumley

It was a poor goal to concede but I think you have to blame the team — lost as a team today. There seemed to be little in the way of space mind you to break down a good defensive unit. Obviously the keeper needs to play his part as we had to open things up late on but those things happen when you go for broke.

I thought it was a bit much he critcised a lot of the team but his line up and experiment with Tav at wing back was massively detrimental to the midfield. also the wholesale changes at 60 mins made us worse rather than better it seemed like blind panic the midfield was all over the place when before we were very much still in the game. To me Wilder was as much if not more to blame than the players

People love managers for speaking out and telling it as it is. However you don’t hear Conti, Klopp, Pep etc doing it so publicly and singling out individuals and there is a reason for that. You don’t slag blokes off publicly one week then ask ask them to run through a brick wall for you the next game. Wilder picks the team, Wilder develops the tactics, Wilder makes the subs, Wilder has a whole week to make sure they don’t look like a shambles on a Saturday afternoon. Before you talk about everyone else Wilder look at yourself first.

I don’t personally get the problem will calling things in public from a manager.

The footage is there to see, the pundits dissect everything and we all have our opinions on here, yet apparently the gaffer can’t be afforded the same.
I understand there’s good, and very bad, ways of doing so. And tbf I haven’t heard the boss yet - but I’d be very surprised if he was totally out of line and digging into the lads in a ‘public shaming’ as someone put.
They’re all big boys, and I think there’s a time and a place, and this seems like the moment to say some honest things about the group.
He’s often praising them, and I think if what he’s saying is truthful, what’s the problem?
Obviously we’re all disappointed and I think we can see that Joe is struggling , he needs replacing, but it’s not personal. I wish him well and felt he has shown some real character at times this season in spite of his many errors.

Lumley should have saved the goal, and it's far from the first mistake he's made this season.

If saying that he should have saved it publicly is slagging him off, then the world has gone very soft.

Lumley will know he should have saved the goal, the defence will know he should have saved the goal, the fans know, the manager knows, the opposition knows, the neutral media knows.

He's publicly defended Lumley over and over this season, through multiple mistakes and limited saves.

So why say it then? No point in Wilder wasting his breath if everyone already knows, surely?

Why give his reaction after the match at all?

We expect him to comment on performances, good and bad.

He's defended Lumley and our strikers repeatedly throughout the season.

If Lumley can't handle other people being told that he should be making a simple save and stops trying, then he shouldn't be a goalkeeper.
I don't expect him to be our first choice next season whatever happens.

What’s the point in calling him out?

Is it going to turn him into Allison or Ederson? No.

Is it going to stop him making mistakes? No.

Is it going to stop our defence and midfield passing back to him when he has opposition players closing down on him? No.

Do it behind closed doors. He isn’t going to drop Lumley for the next 7 games because the alternative is no better and he won’t throw Sol Brynn in, so it achieves nothing.
What’s the point calling him out?
Do it behind closed doors???
What’s the difference? It’s still not going to turn him into a decent goalie or stop him making mistakes is it?

Oh I thought you were suggesting he do it behind closed doors.
so I was asking what the difference was.

He is not even an average Championship Keeper. There are people on this board that argue a keeper doesn’t gain you many points, well we would be comfortably in the play offs with a bang average keeper rather than the gaffridden keeper we have. Yes all keepers make good saves and make mistakes, but the frequency of his that end up in goals is off the scale for me, compared to others we have had in the past.

Wilder called out the entire team except for Dijksteel. He did so (imho) because he knows the seriousness of that performance with 2 big games looming and has always spoken honestly and fairly. I have no issue with his comments we all saw it, he knows were not stupid. Min 4 points needed for me over Easter.
A goal saved is as good as a goal scored !! if lumley missed as many as the stikers do where would we be ? I do think Lumley is not a great keeper! If our stikrers put chances away today this wouldnt really be anything to moan about

I like Lumley, daft mistakes and all. Is he Buffon, no.
But… maybe it’s an age thing, if I drop a ******* at work, I have more respect for someone who calls me out, I expect nothing less.

I'm not a fan of our keeper.
But this is not right.
It should be kept in the dressing room.
He may not be a good keeper but I see nothing to tell me he isn't a good man.
Keep it in the dressing room. Drop him and give him to Sunderland on a free.
But don't give him a public dressing down like that.
That's our job as fans.
More disappointed in the manager for comments like that than I am in the result.

Public dressing down? 😂

"It's a disappointing goal, the goalkeeper needs to do better. I’ve protected him for quite a while now, Joe (Lumley). There is no real hiding place there, it is another poor goal."

That's the extent of what he said.
It's fair and in no way harsh.
Lumley did need to do better and it's part of a litany of errors he's made whilst here, and this in yet another crucial game.
He didn't question Lumley as a person or question his effort.

I'd be more annoyed if Wilder had tried to deflect from yet another soft goal that he's let in.

You really are missing the point but thanks for answering.
