F*CK VAR

Though Wilson’s more of a Penna than the first . Not sure any contact at all with Cairney, and if was, the contact that was potentially made doesn’t make you fall over the way he did.

I thought Wilson's was worse as he initiated the contact. Cairney's was soft but given on the field so would have to be overturned. Wilson pen was given by VAR.

In theory the defender hit Wilson and made no contact with ball. Don’t think enough to knock him to the ground and he dived and rewarded by VAR.

The first though defender got ball and not the player who then dived in air and landed on floor. VAR again rewarded a dive

I watched the replays and I thought that the defender slightly caught Cairney albeit not enough to knock him to the ground but enough that VAR didn't overturn it

That’s part of the problem, we both seen same footage and have slightly different views.

I though defender got a touch on ball first and missed Cairney. If VAR is getting involved, clear and obvious or not, should they not be saying unclear if caught him, either way it was not enough to cause him to jump in air flip his legs up and fall forward. From the contact made the human body would not fall in that manner there for dive, yellow card no Penna

They were both dives.
Agreed and thereby lies the solution. Diving should be punished EVERY TIME not just waved away as happens far too often

Yes so in that case the penalty had been given on the field you should say nothing to cause us to overturn it, therefore we go with the refs call. On field decision should be the default unless it is a clear and obvious error. Neither of those calls were, so the first one should have stood and the second one shouldn't have been given.

VAR just wants scrapping - yes we will still moan about refs and the obvious penalty’s they don’t give, and the clear dives that they do, but let’s be honest VAR hasn’t really solved anything - you still get controversial decisions and the game gets constantly interrupted for every borderline decision. Just get on with it and accept some will go your way and others won’t

Angles were terrible for the first. Don't think there was any conclusive evidence that either the ball or man was made contact with. Technology at fault rather than the ref I think.

Second looked a pen to me. Regardless of a dive or otherwise Semedo sticks out his leg across Wilson, thus impeding him. Yes Wilson may have bought it, but it's still a foul.

Second one, in my opinion, is one of the most obvious dives you will ever see. The fact it was given on review amazed me.

I didn't think it was a total dive - there was some contact. But not enough for me, for it to qualify as a clear and obvious error not to have given it.

All subjective, so VAR doesn't 'help' at all. If we must have it then it should be left for black and white decisions, perhaps with a couple of reviews per team, as in cricket, for the absolute howlers - indeed that might add to the spectacle?

I think VAR actually encourages players to dive more now because in their minds if the footage shows even the most minimal of contact, certainly when it’s slowed down to the levels it is during current VAR reviews, then their actions are justified.

It was always going to be terrible but it’s actually much, much worse than I thought it would be. I can’t stand it. I genuinely dread the prospect of it being used in our matches to the point where you think would it really be that brilliant to go up and endure it ruining our games as well.
