F*CK VAR

Then surely a better solution would be a linesman on each side for the full length of the pitch - probably four people.
Had this discussion yesterday, what happens if one says definitely offside and one says definitely on. This solves nothing, just creates more complexity

Defer to the one who wasn't unsighted. Or have a linesman for the 18 yard box and one for the rest, but on the same side - so only one is active at any given point.

Instead of extra linesmen, you could maybe go for a ref in each half like they have in hockey - less pressure on a single ref and more precise rules needed around currently subjective options e.g. when a card is shown.

The point is that there are non-technical solutions available to the multitude of issues that have arisen whilst trying to implement VAR.

VAR itself was introduced before the technology could cope and we now have the added luxury of incompetent officials running it.

Technology for absolutes - when it works - and then introduce something else if it's actually needed.

I think you have a point that maybe the whole structure of game refereeing needs to be looked at.

Maybe two types of referee - the behavioural referee who is expert at the psychology of keeping the players disciplined, clean and managed and the technical referee who makes sure the key decisions in terms of red cards, offsides and penalties are correctly reached.

Both are important in properly running a top level game and perhaps they are different specialisms.

Neither is unsighted. It’s a tight call and they differ. It’s a terrible idea to add more eyes and voices into the mix and try and come to the right decision. It might help with last night, but it’ll make the whole process messy for most decisions where someone isn’t in the way

Agreed, and offside is a black and white decision, and within a small error tolerance (much smaller than the human eye) they are accurate
