F*CK VAR

Leeds 3rd goal last night wouldn't have taken that long.

In fact it would've taken a matter of seconds for VAR to confirm it was offside.

It wasn't a close call.

I understand the frustrations with VAR when taking too long at making decisions.

And the others? Bamfords? The potential foul in the build up to Lath’s first? We’d have been sat there for ages waiting before knowing.

Bamford's was similar to the Cov one for me (i.e. Offside) :) so maybe would have taken a similar amount of time, which was clearly not 5 minutes on Sunday. Probably 2?

The foul in the build up to LL's goal would almost certainly have been reviewed. Obviously it's subjective but I'm fairly sure a hand in the back would have resulted in a foul and no goal.

That said, it will be interested if VAR is introduced in the Champo and further down the leagues as referees, regardless of VAR, tend to "let a bit more go". I think providing the VAR is a Championship level official it shouldn't be a huge issue?

I think the ref let a lot of physical challenges go last night and it added to the entertainment of the match. He was letting it go for both sides and the game flowed. It had a real derby feel to the game, especially the first half.

Agree, and I don't think VAR would necessarily have changed that - in terms of physicality it only intervenes with potential red cards. That said, would probably have taken a look at VDBs end of first half.

I think you have stumbled on a solution.
We have someone from each club who is an ‘offside expert’ with the naked eye.
Looks like you can start.

As soon as the ball hits the back of the net - you press Y/N and it’s done.
Now, they will all be reviewed after games and if success rate drops to less than 75% someone else has a go.
We have a solution, VAR

I think Boromart has a point, the Cov goal did look offside when watching on the telly and the Leeds one was one of the most obvious you will ever see, pure incompetence or maybe something else by the linesman.
I'm going with unfortunate for the lino. He can only give what he sees and Bamford blocked his view.

and bamfords on Azaz.....but both would have been a no

I hate VAR, not just for the way it sucks the soul out of the game, but also the fact that it was even considered necessary in the first place.
As said above, refs down the leagues tend to let a lot more go and the game tends to flow. Why is that? I'd suggest it's because despite not all contact being a foul, it's only because players, managers and the media at the top level suggest shyte like "he was entitled to go down" that the bar for an offence has been lowered.
To go alongside that, players are regularly initiating contact, like the penalty last night. Did Dijksteel foul the man or did their player simply make sure he got into the box and then change direction ensuring a clash of legs.
I don't see how you can have VAR in some games and not others and still apply the same laws as it's not the same game.
I feel aggrieved when a dodgy decision goes against us, but I'll equally accept when we get away with one.
Improve the standard of officiating and raise the threshold of what a foul is and stop tailoring the laws to accommodate VAR. We saw enough decisions over the weekend where VAR came to different conclusions to see that it is a waste of time.

But you can understand why though? The TV revenue absolute dwarfs walk-ups these days. VAR is effectively the output of Sky wanting to market the game to a wider audience and reshape its image in the early 90s.
Of course, that's what is so annoying about it. No thought for the fans who actually go to the games.

Money talks unfortunately.

Short to medium term the Super League might even things out - I'd expect a rebalancing of revenues (away from the current top leagues into the SL), definitely if clubs "left" their existing leagues but I'm not convinced a rule change would follow anyway.

Then surely a better solution would be a linesman on each side for the full length of the pitch - probably four people.

VAR seems to me to be a case of technology for the sake of technology without any attempt to fix - or even identify - the underlying problem.

The fact that the VAR officials are still making mistakes on a regular basis shows that either:

(a) the rules aren't workable with VAR as is
(b) the officials are incompetent

If it's (a) then we need to decide whether we want a new game based around technology. If it's (b) then no amount of technology will make it better without better training.

The single biggest issue appears to be the amount of money at stake - especially in terms of relegation/promotion to the Premier League. Getting rid of the disparity would make the mistakes far less consequential.

Personally don’t think extra linesmen would solve the problem.

Part of it is just the speed of movement of these players along with a lot of ‘dummy’ running and false moves trying to pull defenders around to create gaps. It’s too much for your average 45 year old linesman who is taking dogs abuse from the players and the crowd.

They need help.
